BOX SCORE (HTML)

NASHVILLE, Tenn.Indiana State used a 23-8 first half run and then an 11-0 second half spurt to maintain a lead that they would hold onto late in downing Longwood by a score of 79-68 in the opening game of the Vanderbilt Holiday Tournament at Memorial Gym. ISU improves to 7-3 on the season while the Lancers fall to 4-9.

ISU hit three of their first four 3-pointers to jump out to a quick 23-8 advantage. The Lancers got hot in their own rite, using four 3-pointers by Courtney Dyer to trim the Sycamore advantage to 35-30 at the break. A half court attempt by Annie Bankhead rimmed in and out of the bucket as time expired in the first half to nearly give ISU an eight point lead heading into intermission.

The Sycamores were on fire early in the second half as Angela Phillips and Kelsey Luna each drained a pair of triples to push the lead up to a game-high 17 points with 13 minutes left, 57-40.

Longwood got no closer than seven points the rest of the way, 64-57 with 7:30 left on a lay-up by Keiva Small as the Sycamores rebuilt the lead and maintained it at 11 at the final buzzer.

ISU was paced in the game by Laura Rudolphi who scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, for her fourth double-double of the season and the sixth of her career. Rudolphi’s 16 points put her in double figures scoring for the seventh consecutive game.

She was one of four Sycamores to hit double figures as she was joined by Luna with 12, Rachel Maenpaa with 11 and Angela Phillips with 10.

The Sycamores were out-rebounded by the Lancers, 41-40, but Indiana State did pull down 16 offensive boards in the game for 14 second chance points.

The ISU press was dominant in the game, forcing 25 Longwood turnovers. The Sycamores were able to convert those miscues into 28 points.

Indiana State continues play in the Vanderbilt Holiday Tournament tomorrow, December 21 when they play either Vanderbilt or Lipscomb in the championship game. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m. (ET).
