KELSEY LUNA NAMED MVC NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK

ST. LOUIS – For the second time this season Indiana State freshman Kelsey Luna (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph’s Academy) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week by the league office.

Luna becomes the third Sycamore in the four-year history of the award to earn it multiple times during their season of eligibility. Ashley Clark won it four times en route to being named MVC Newcomer of the Year in 2004-05 while Stephanie Lisch was honored three times en route to being named MVC Freshman of the Year in 2003-04.

Last week, Luna went for 19 points against No. 12 Vanderbilt in the championship game of the Vanderbilt Holiday Tournament. Luna hit 6-of-10 shots from the field, including a blazing 4-of-7 from long range as well as 3-of-4 from the free throw line in scoring her 19 points. Luna added a pair of assists and four rebounds from the point guard position as the Sycamores just missed an upset of the Commodores on their home floor.

Luna scored 12 points by hitting a trio of triples and notching a conventional 3-point play in the Sycamores’ tournament opening 79-68 victory over Longwood.

For the week, Luna averaged 15.5 points and 2.0 rebounds per game. Luna hit 10-of-18 shots for the field, including a sparkling mark of 7-of-14 from long range. She added five assists and three steals over the two-game period as well.

Things will heat up for the Sycamores on Friday, December 29 when they host the Valley’s No. 1 Preseason selection, Drake at Hulman Center in the conference opener for both teams. Tip-off against the Bulldogs is slated for 7:05 p.m. (ET).
