Research Interests: avian genome mapping; molecular, population, conservation and evolutionary genetics.

Michael is interested in avian comparative genomics and physical mapping. He was involved in the genome projects for several avian species including the chicken, turkey, zebra finch, and California condor. In his research he employs high throughput BAC library screening to obtain sequence-ready large-insert clones harboring specific genes and/or markers - these can be used to obtain sequence information, as well as for physical and comparative mapping, and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) assignment. The technique, which utilizes BAC filter hybridization with numerous overgo probes, has showed to be particularly fruitful for non-model species where detailed genome and sequence information are often lacking. For example, in the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus; Family Cathartidae), initiation of the genome project based on the BAC library resulted in the first chicken-condor comparative map that is now being integrated with the linkage and cytogenetic maps, and, eventually, will help us identify a cause for a genetic abnormality, lethal chondrodystrophy, in this highly endangered species.

Michael's current work on the white-throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) includes a combination of genomic and bioinformatics approaches to reveal the nature of distinct morphological, chromosomal and behavioral variation in this passerine bird.

In the past, Michael also worked in the field of population genetic studies, molecular genetics, and conservation in economically important avian species. He studied chicken genetic diversity and association with production traits using molecular genetic markers (e.g. protein polymorphisms, microsatellites, RAPDs, SNPs, PCR-RFLP) and techniques (e.g. BESS), and other inter-disciplinary approaches (e.g. morphological and molecular sexing markers in birds).

Michael has been involved in and maintains national and international collaborations on several genetic/genomic projects involving such organisms as a propionibacterium, wild rice, Garnett's bushbaby, American pika, chicken and other avian species.
