Funny…

November 5th, 2009

So I’m currently checking my email and a funny Urban Dictionary word of the day pops up. This is it:

Piglet Flu – During times of pandemic, the common flu is known as Piglet Flu. While less deadly than Swine Flu it still makes you feel like crap. However, because it is not infamous like swine flu you get no respect from having it. So you feel like crap and no one cares because you don’t have H1N1.

Doctor: How do you feel.

Patient: Like crap.

Doctor: Well the tests came back, you don’t have swine flu. So get outta here you lazy bum! Come back with a real illness.

Patient (as he is thrown out): But I really do have the flu. Even if it is only piglet flu.

Our campus has been lucky to have very few cases of the flu, but we are still constantly being warned to be safe and wash our hands. With all of the warnings, I see this as a break in the seriousness. I’m not saying that I’m not being careful (I just attacked my room with Lysol!!), I’m only saying that a sense of humor can make you feel a little better about the Nasties you sit next to in class :) .

Freedom Center in Cincinnati, OH

November 5th, 2009

Today my contemporary slavery class went to the Freedom Center in Cincinnati, OH. It was amazing!!! They have amazing short films, amazing exhibits, and this really neat genome floor. I tried to trace my family history, but I didn’t know enough facts to do so. No matter, it was still a really great place. It makes you think a lot about your life and what it may have been like if things didn’t change. It also brought to my attention the current problems in the world surrounding slavery. You would think that in this day and age slavery wouldn’t be around. Unfortunately it is. If you have a chance to go to the museum, please do. It’s an eye opening experience.

Homecoming Weekend!

October 26th, 2009

Now that I have officially recuperated from the weekend, I can tell you what I did homecoming weekend in 30 words or less. Friday, I attended the Trike race followed by the Alumni Gala, Saturday was the parade, tent city, and football game, and Sunday was the praise service. Now for the more in depth explanation.

Friday was the Trike race and both the men and women’s races were a success. The women raced their 36 laps in 33 minutes and 39 seconds with no major injuries. Zeta Tau Alpha was the winner followed by Chi Omega and Alpha Sigma Alpha. The men’s race was a little more heated. Unfortunately I had to leave to attend the gala but the winner was Sigma Alpha Epsilon, followed by Sycamore Cycling and Phi Kappa Psi. You can read about the race on the student newspaper’s website at the link at the bottom.

The gala was a nice event too. It started at 7pm but I had to leave early from the race to get ready. It was a “cocktail” night. A little out of the norm for me with the fancy finger foods but I made it work. I made plans with my friend that I went with to make a McDonald’s run after. The highlight of the night was a presentation about the March On Campaign that the university officially kicked off at the beginning of the week. It’s a campaign to raise $85 million for the campus and we have hit the 55% mark with a total amount raised of like $47 million! It was also announced that the new College of Ed was being renamed the Bayh College of Education. It’s named after Birch Bayh, a past senator for Indiana. I’m more familiar with his son, Evan Bayh, but it was nice seeing him and hearing him speak. They also recognized some alumni that evening and had several speakers including a member from our basketball team. Overall the night was pretty nice.

Saturday was a beast of it’s own. Friday night I got a total of two hours of sleep. I had to wake up early to get ready for the parade at 3am!! When I got to the college of business to meet up with the other volunteers, we immediately got to work. We began chalking the streets for placement of parade entries, putting up street baracades, and any other stuff that was needed to be done before the entries arrived. At about 7am, we were divided up and sent out to line up the entries. I was paired with the homecoming coordinator and we were in charge of the first 20 entries. We had to make sure they were in place and ready to roll out at 9am. At first, no one was arriving but by 8:30am all entries were ready to go. After that, the parade went on like clock work. All 13o+ entries made it through the route and the participants were happy and enjoyed the show. Next stop for me: Tent City.

My friend, also a parade volunteer, and I went to grab some blankets, food, and her sister to head out to the stadium. We perused tent city for a but until we had to man our own different tents. Union Board paired with SGA to have a tent with some food so I sat in there and enjoyed the festivities. At least until I began to doze in my chair. I tried fighting the sleep for a while but gave up and took a power nap.

At 3pm, my friends and I went in to the game and was really enjoying the teams effort. I stuggled to stay awake but managed to last until the 3rd quarter. As many of you may or may not know, WE WON!!! I knew it in my soul that we were gonna do it, but it would’ve been nice to rush the field. Unfotunately, I was just too tired to make it through. When I got to my room, I immediately crashed for three hours straight, woke up to eat, and crashed again until the morning. It was easily the best sleep I had all week.

After the game my homecoming wasn’t over! Sunday morning the school had a praise service for the alumni, students, and community. It was very nice. Two choirs were there to sing and six reverends gave a quick 5 minute sermon to lift our spirits for the day. I really enjoyed it and was very pleased when the president of the university spoke and said that he wanted to make this a reoccuring event for homecoming. He gets lots of cool points for that. I thought it was a great ending to a great week.

Instead of a phrase of the day, I’ll put the link to the homnecoming pictures with the news article link. Take a look at the fun we had over the week. We had a lot of it.

Sycamore Sync

October 21st, 2009

So yesterday I told you all about an event that I was hosting with the Student Government Association President. Well here’s the details. Sycamore Sync is a lip syncing show where groups choreograph a 5 minute routine to a mix of songs. It was amazing last night! I would easily say that it was the best show in a few years. The SGA Pres and I opened the show with our own routine. We mixed Ike and Tina Turner’s version of Proud Mary with Rick James Super Freak. It was amazing!! I’m gonna find a video somewhere and try to get it up. For now, you’ll have to be satisfied with pictures from the event that the ISU photographers took. Look for our performance in pics 8 through 36. Next event is the Torchlight Parade and Pep Rally!

Phrase of the day: (About using the restroom) Sometimes I like to hold it, I like to test my limit.

Flag Football!!!

October 20th, 2009

Once again, the story of my life, WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE!!! It’s been a non-stop ride the past two weeks and we’re only beginning!! This week is HOMECOMING!!! It’s very festive on campus and I plan on giving you all play by play updates starting this evening with Sycamore Sync. You’ll have to wait to hear what this is until then, but let’s give a recap of last week’s highlights.

Highlight number one was bike tech for the Tricycle Derby Qualifications that took place on Sunday night. The derby, better known as Trike on campus, is a race where teams use adult sized tricycles. It’s pretty intense. Anyway, the bike tech is a session to make sure the bikes are okay to ride. This year we have over 30 participants. Bike tech would normally take about an hour and a half. This year it took almost 3 hours!! At least all the bikes except a few were in working order.

The next highlight was my organization’s, Union Board (UB), flag football game. I am not an athlete but we went out there and played hard and won! We played at 10pm in the cold, drizzle, and mud. It was just like Sunday Night NFL. We played a cool team that was super laid back. We both were out there to have fun and luckily we were the ones who won. We play game two this Thursday so we’re excited.

The last highlight of the week was the Trike qualifications. They were supposed to take place on Friday but do to the weather, they were postponed to Sunday. It was a long day but worth it. We were out there from 10am to 4:45pm. Each team raced 6 laps to get the best time for places for this Friday. Everyone was allowed two tries but luckily most of the teams chose to use their first time. It was a great day weather wise too. It was sunny and only a little chilly. Hopefully the warm weather will stay around for this Friday and we’ll have a good race.

Well, those were the highlights of last week. This week there will be plenty of interesting things to report about so stay tuned to my blog! Until next time, phrase of the day!!

During quals, one of the volunteers was asked to alphabetize some papers. Her response to the task was, “I love the alphabet!” She’s so cute!!!

Productivity!!

October 12th, 2009

For the record, today was the most productive school day this entire semester. It is currently 10:43pm and I have completed my PR assignments. Usually I procrastinate so bad that I don’t START until 1am. What a day!!

Phrase of the day: Restless Lip Syndrome – When a person keeps interrupting a conversation and can’t keep their mouth shut.

Recapping the future

October 11th, 2009

So the title is pretty cool, right? Yea not so much. I was trying to be creative but you know how that can be sometimes. The purpose of the title is to prepare you for the recap of my previous week and to prepare you for my explanation of the next week. Like I said, I was trying to be creative!

So last week was pretty smooth. It was a four day week because of fall break, but it seemed to last forever! The highlight of the week was the speaker we had on Tuesday. Will Keim is a motivational, leadership skill building, super nice speaker/guy. He’s very good at what he does and he’s actually worth listening to! I know I seem like I’m doing a plug for him but he’s really good! His ideas on leadership, character, and having empathy for others is just great stuff. He’s been to campus twice since I’ve been a student here and I know that they’ll be bringing him back sooner than later.

The next interesting part of my week came during Student Government Association’s Senate meeting. A student initiative that has finally come to fruition is a system that allows students to view the grades that a professor has given out for the past two semesters. My assumption is that the student looking up this info would use it to determine whether or not to take this class and professor. I personally see the information as interesting but not valuable enough to be used to determine if a class is worth my time…but that’s me!

Other than that my week was pretty normal. I had a productive weekend at home doing homework, but I still have a lot to do!! It’s crazy!!! Next week should be interesting, though. I plan to be in homework overhaul  mode. Homecoming starts Friday and I can’t be bogged down with work. Hopefully everything will work out. Tomorrow, my friend who’s competing in the Miss ISU pageant is doing a fundraiser at a local restaurant so I’ll be heading to that as well as meetings and work and class. It’s all in a days work for a college student.

Before I leave you, here’s my phrase of the day. One of my Resident Assistant friends said this to me and I must share.

“I was doing my rounds and a resident said I was too nice to do documentation so I said don’t try me. I guess I’m going to have to prove that sucka wrong (lol)!”

She’s silly! Have a good night!

Where has the time gone…

October 5th, 2009

I’m officially lost as to how it’s already October! I could have sworn that yesterday was the beginning of September. Now it’s cold outside and folks are talking about Halloween and Trick or Treating. Unlike them, I’m counting down to the days to our Homecoming. In 11 days, Tricycle Qualifications (Trike as we like to call it) will begin and then the week of no sleep will officially kick off. I really enjoy it, but it’s just a big drain on the mind. It’ll all be worth it though when the week is said and done. If you’re in the Haute on October 24th, make sure you come out to the parade and game!

Phrase of the Day: “I don’t like apples, they make my mouth itch.”

Food for thought!

September 25th, 2009

Quick little knowledge nugget for you today. I was in my Contemporary Slavery class today learning about early slavery in the lower south of the US (Georgia, the Carolinas). My professor was explaining the work conditions and type of work that slaves were forced to do and in this part of the south, they worked on rice and indigo plantations. The work was very deadly, rice areas in particular, so as you can guess many didn’t want to work in those conditions. If the slaves were sold to those locations, it was considered being sold down the river because of the way they were transported down the river. What’s the point of this, you say?? Well if you ever hear your elders say, “They sold me down the river,” you’ll now know that whatever happened wasn’t cool. Food for thought. Take a bite and enjoy!

Looking to the Future aka This Week

September 20th, 2009

Hello again world! I had the pleasure of having the most hectic week of the semester last week. I did survive though, and plan on topping it this week. I have a pretty big project due Tuesday, several meetings throughout the week, a working retreat on Friday, Family Day on Saturday, and a late night event Saturday night. I also have class and homework and my job as well. Welcome to the world of an over achiever!! It’s not something I do on purpose. I actually consider myself to be pretty lazy. My problem is my inability to say no when folks ask me to do something. I’m working on it though.

As I begin learning how this great blog site works, I plan on posting some pics and videos of some of the events that my organization puts on during the academic year. Our first event was during the first weekend of the year. We partnered with the new Student Rec and SGA to put on Rec Fest. My org, Union Board, was in charge of the bingo. You’d be surprised how many folks were in the Rec at midnight playing the game. I would at least say about 100..we ran out of bingo cards! Then we brought in a hypnotist that was great. We had a packed house with standing room only. Crazy!! Next up on our list is our Once in a Blue Moon Series that we do about once a month. We’re bringing in a comedian/game show. He brings about $500 in cash and prizes and gives it all away to lucky winners and random bystanders. The students liked him last year so we thought we’d try it again. I’ll let you know how it works out.

Before I go, I can’t forget the “Phrase of the Day.” This week though, it’ll be the “Moment of the Day” and we have to take it back a week. All I have to say is Kanye. Oh Mr. West. I believe in one of his songs it’s starts off with “Wake up Mr. West!” Yeah, he needs to follow that advice. I’m waiting for someone to try that on me during one of my meetings. I’ve got pranksters around me.  But really, something inspirational for you:  “Try not to let anyone get you down, smile and love life.” Mary J. Blige said it on her Twitter. I love her btw.
