Apply to an EES Graduate Program

EES has three graduate degrees to choose from;
M.A. Geography
M.S. Earth & Quaternary Sciences
Ph.D. Spatial and Earth Sciences

Applying to our Graduate Programs

Application deadline applies for both domestic and international students to all degree programs.  To insure consideration for funding, your application must be submitted by the fall deadline as funding is typically determined by the fall deadline each academic year.  Conditional Admission for missing documents are not granted.
January 15 Fall
November 1 Spring

Students are selected based on:

  1. Academic Background
  2. TOEFL (required for international students - Original)
  3. Letters of Recommendation (3 letters are required)
  4. Personal Statement/Letter of Intent
  5. Curriculum Vitae
  6. NOTE: Supplemental Documents are highly recommended but not required

Students are expected to contact potential faculty advisors to discuss possible research opportunities.

Application Instructions and Requirements

All application materials are to be uploaded to Graduate Admissions, instructions for U.S. CITIZENS AND PERMANENT RESIDENTS can be found here and the instructions for INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS here.

  1. Complete ISU's College of Graduate and Professional Studies online application.
  2. Send official transcripts for all institutions attended to Graduate Admissions (see address below). E-transcripts should be sent to admissions@indstate.edu.
    • Transcripts must be sent from directly from the attended school
    • The university will require a final transcript showing highest degree conferred or awarded. 
  3. Personal Statement
    • This essay describes in detail your research interests, your academic career goals and indicates the faculty member(s) you would like to work with. Please indicate if you would like to be considered for Graduate Assistantship funding and a tuition fee waiver in your statement.
  4. Curriculum Vitae
  5. Three letters of recommendation required
    • Submit reference names and emails through the online graduate admission system. 
      • Your references will be asked to submit recommendations electronically.  References should be familiar with your academic, research, and/or fieldwork record.
  6. Supplemental Documents
    • Though supplemental documents are not required, it is highly recommended that an applicant provide additional materials to the review committee. These electronic documents may consist of: abstracts, conference posters, or writing samples. Upload your supplemental documents to your Graduate Admissions account (Supplemental Materials).
  7. GRE scores (PHD Only)

Additional requirements for International applicants: In addition to above requirements ISU requires the following materials.

  1. Official TOEFL, ELS or IELTS scores must be sent directly to Graduate Admissions (unless exempt).

    • ISU institution code is 1322
  2. Copy of passport
  3. Affidavit of Financial Support found here
