Graduate Music Program Information, Forms, and Policies

MUSIC CONCENTRATIONS

The School of Music at Indiana State University offers three concentrations of study for graduate music students on the M.M. degree: Conducting Concentration, Music Education Concentration, and Music Performance Concentration. Curricular requirements for each concentration can be found on the ISU Graduate Catalog:

The number of hours for each concentration totals 34 credits: 3 credits for the research course, 10 credits for the core courses, and 21 credits for the major and elective courses. Areas of study that comprise the core music courses are music theory, music history and literature, music performance, and music ensembles.

ORAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION

The master’s Oral Comprehensive Examination in music enables graduate music students to synthesize their graduate music experiences through a final oral examination. The student identifies a chair, and, in consultation with the chair, selects a three-person committee to serve as the examining body. The examination should be scheduled during the final semester of the student’s residency, but in no case prior to the completion of 24 hours of course work. MUSIC PERFORMANCE RECITAL

Each graduate music student pursuing the concentration in music performance must present a public recital.

MUSIC CONDUCTING RECITAL

Each graduate music student pursuing the concentration in conducting (choral or wind) must present a public performance. Information and guidelines about this conducting performance can be downloaded by clicking one of the following links:

MUSIC EDUCATION PRACTICUM

Each graduate music student pursuing the Concentration in Music Education must complete a Music Education Practicum (3 credits) or a Master’s Thesis (6 credits). Information and guidelines for the music education practicum can be downloaded by clicking the following links:
