John Spicknall , a member of the Indiana state University music faculty since 1969, Dr. John Spicknall teaches courses in the areas of jazz performance, jazz education and for years he was director of the ISU Jazz Ensemble. He received both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Peabody Conservatory of Music (Baltimore) and completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Maryland. His clarinet studies have been with Ignatius Gennusa,2 Sidney Forrest, Harold Wright, and Norman Heim.

As a jazz pianist, Spicknall is largely self-taught although he has worked with such noted jazz teachers as Jamey Aebersold, David Baker, and Jerry Coker. He has become a much sought-after clinician and jazz performer throughout the state of Indiana and elsewhere. Performance credits include appearances at the International Association of Jazz Educator Conventions and concerts with such jazz artists as Art Pepper, Bobby Shew, Clark Terry, Gary Burton, and Louis Bellson.
