Description: The Wesley Lyda Scholarship was established in
1996 by Dr. Wesley Lyda to encourage African-American students to choose
Afro-American Studies as their major area of concentration and to encourage more
African American students to enter the teaching profession. Dr. Lyda received
degrees from DePauw University, Indiana State University and Indiana University.
In 1968 Dr. Lyda returned to Indiana State University as a Professor of Secondary
Education and served as the first Director of the Afro-American Studies Center until
his retirement in 1980.
Open To: African American undergraduate students majoring in African American Studies and/or Education.

Selection Criteria: Eligible students should complete a request for consideration to the Scholarship Committee in the Department of African and African American Studies.
