Department of English Scholarships Scholarship Name: Alumni Scholarship Description: Established in 2002 through contributions from alumni of the Department of English. This is a non-renewable scholarship intended to support one deserving freshman annually during his or her first year of higher education. Scholarship Name: James Richard and Virginia Bash Memorial Scholarship Description: One-time award in recognition of outstanding performance Open To: Graduate students majoring in English Selection Criteria: Graduate students majoring in English, minimum 3.7 gpa while an undergraduate student, 3.5 gpa in English while an undergraduate, minimum 3.7 as a graduate student, demonstrated strong interest in the study of literature. Scholarship Name: Emily Salter Brett Scholarship Description: Established in 1997 through the contributions of Dr. and Mrs. William J. Brett to honor the memory of Emily Salter Brett. Mrs. Brett, a member of the Department of English until her death in 1963, had a high regard for teachers and great respect for the English language. This is a renewable scholarship intended to support the education of future English teachers and is awarded each year to one incoming freshman declaring an English Teaching major. Landini, professor emeritus in the Department of English and the eighth president of Indiana State University. This is a renewable scholarship available to continuing students who demonstrate merit on the basis of a writing sample, academic standing, and financial need. Scholarship Name: Leroy and Mary Morris Scholarship Description: Established in 1929 by Mary Morris in honor of her husband, Leroy Morris, a teacher of English literature and lifelong scholar of poetry, philosophy, and the creative arts. This is a renewable scholarship available to one incoming freshman declaring an English or English Teaching major. Preference is given to teaching majors, as the scholarship is expressly intended to help this student enrich his own life and that of others. Scholarship Name: Hazel Tesh Pfennig Scholarship Description: Established in 1971 through a generous bequest by Hazel Tesh Pfennig, professor emeritus of English. Dr. Pfennig earned her undergraduate degree from Indiana State University in 1917 (when it was the Indiana State Normal School). She joined the Department of English as a faculty member that same year, retiring 34 years later, in 1951. The Pfennig is a renewable scholarship available to incoming freshmen and continuing students in English.
