Department of History Memorial Scholarships


Scholarship Name: Nellie Margreta Harr Scholarship

Description: Made in remembrance of Mrs. Harr, a Clay County historian who received ISU undergraduate and graduate degrees in social science and history. The award is presented to the outstanding junior history student.

Open To: Undergraduates in their junior year majoring in History.

Selection Criteria: To be eligible for this award, students must have completed at least four history courses of which at least one must be at the 300/400 level.

Award Amount: Amount varies.

Number of Awards Given Annually: 1

Selection Process: All History majors are automatically considered for department scholarships and awards. Individuals’ academic records are matched with the criteria for each scholarship or award, a committee of history faculty reviews eligible students and makes recommendations to the entire department. The entire history faculty makes final determination of all awards and scholarships.

Scholarship Name: Bryant Spann Memorial Scholarship

Description: Presented in remembrance of Bryant Spann, son of Edward K. and Joanne E. Spann. Dr. Edward Spann is Professor Emeritus of History at Indiana State University and the 1998 College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor. The award recognizes a junior who displays promise as a history teacher and/or scholar.

Open To: Undergraduate history students who will have Junior-level status (60-93 hours) at the time of the award and have completed 15 academic hours in history.

Selection Criteria: To be considered for the award, eligible students must:

  1. Attend ISU full-time;
  2. Be pursuing a major in the Department of History or the History concentration for teaching majors;
  3. Display great promise as a history teacher and/or scholar;
  4. Have a 3.5 GPA. in history and 3.1 cumulative GPA.;
  5. Be prepared to enroll in at least six academic hours of history during the scholarship year.

Award Amount: Amount varies. This scholarship is not renewable.

Scholarship Name: John and Carl E. Vukusich Memorial Scholarship

Description: This scholarship was established by the Vukusich family to honor the memory of John Vukusich and Carl Eugene Vukusich. Both John and Carl were ordinary men with a common interest in the past. To them history provided the power to define the past, explain the present, and anticipate the future.

Open To: Undergraduate History majors

Selection Criteria: To be eligible for this award, students must be a History major with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and exhibit financial need.

Scholarship Name: DAR Scholarship Fort Harrison Chapter

Description: The Fort Harrison Chapter of the DAR Scholarship was established in 1986 to honor its members and to recognize Indiana State University students who demonstrate knowledge and interest in the study of United States history.

Open To: Undergraduate or graduate students.

Selection Criteria: Must have demonstrated knowledge and interest in United States history or related area.

Award Amount: Amount varies. Fall semester fee waiver.
