Teachers of Spanish medal for an outstanding student in Spanish.

Description: The Michael D. Buzash—Le Cercle Français
Scholarship was first established as the Le Cercle Français Club at Indiana
State University in 1962. The club donation was matched by the club’s faculty
sponsor, Professor Michael D. Buzash. Over the ensuing years, Professor Buzash
has been a regular and significant contributor to the fund. He received his
baccalaureate degree from Indiana State University in 1953 and taught French
and Spanish at ISU in a career that spanned 39 years from 1959 until his
retirement in 1998.
Open To: French majors with Sophomore standing. Under special
circumstances this scholarship may be awarded to a Senior.
Selection Criteria: Selection is based on outstanding academic
achievement. Eligible students must be Sophomores who have completed at least
one year at Indiana State University and have a minimum overall GPA of 3.5 and
3.6 in French. Under special circumstances this scholarship may be awarded to
a Senior.

Description: The award was established in the name of the
late Mary Olga Peters, Professor of Romance Languages, who served on the ISU
faculty for 34 years (1929-63). Ms. Peters was the first faculty advisor for
Phi Tau Chapter of Phi Sigma Iota Foreign Language Honorary and served as Chair
of the Department of Foreign Languages for nine years (1954-63). Upon her
retirement, her family established the Mary O. Peters Scholarship in her honor.
The award is for one year and is issued in the form of a check.
Open To: Students majoring in French, German, Latin, Russian,
or Spanish. who hold membership in Phi Sigma Iota National Foreign Language
Honorary and who plan to teach French, German, Latin, Russian or Spanish.
Selection Criteria: Students must demonstrate qualities of
leadership and good character. A student may qualify regardless of race, color,
or creed.
Award Amount: The amount varies from year to year but is
generally in the $400-$500 range.

Description: Indiana State University fee waiver awarded to
an outstanding student in German by the Terre Haute German Oberlandler Club, as
selected by agreement of the German faculty and the Oberlandler Club.
Open To: Undergraduate German majors.
Selection Criteria: Full-time Indiana State University student
studying advanced German with at least Junior standing who will be returning to
study at Indiana State University the following year. Selection based on need,
scholarship, and future use of the German language.

Description: Funding for the Martha Royse French Prize had
been donated annually for 25 years by the late Martha Royse under the name of
the French Club Prize. In her memory, the prize has been perpetuated by a gift
provided to the ISU Foundation specifically for that purpose by her sister, the
late Ann Royse.
Open To: Freshman or Sophomore French majors.
Selection Criteria: This prize is awarded to a Freshman or
Sophomore majoring in French with the highest grades in First-year French.
