Description: The Virginia Carpenter Bradbury Music
Scholarship was established in 1975 by Dr. Jack and Virginia Carpenter Bradbury
to assist worthy music students who need financial aid. Dr. and Mrs. Bradbury
are both ISU graduates. Mrs. Bradbury was a member of the Orchestra, Band,
Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, A Capella Choir, Kappa Delta Pi (education
honorary, Iota Rho Chi (music club), Kappa Pi (art honorary), Pamarista
(upperclass women’s honorary), Student Council, Women’s League, Sycamore
Players, and Homecoming Committee.

demonstrate considerable development in performance skills, and show evidence of

Description: The George M. Graesch Wind Scholarship was
established in 1984 in honor of George Graesch who retired from the music
faculty at the end of the 1983-84 academic year. The scholarship was
established with contributions from students, alumni, colleagues, family and
other friends of George M. Graesch in honor of 31 years of service at the
University. Mr. Graesch also contributed to the fund.
Open To: New ISU music majors
Selection Criteria: Eligible students need to demonstrate
outstanding performing ability and have good academic standing. The recipient
must study his or her principal instrument for 2 credit hours each semester and
play in 2 Wind Division ensembles.
Award Amount: The award covers in-state fees less the amount(s)
of any other scholarship support such as the Academic Scholarship, Creative and
Performing Arts Scholarship, etc.

Description: The Julia E. Hall Vocal Music Scholarship was
established by contributions from Julia E. Hall, her sister Mrs. Mary Hall
McKee, and friends and family of Julia E. Hall. Ms. Hall earned the M.S. degree
from Indiana State University in 1945 and was a music teacher at Terre Haute
Rankin Junior High School for 52 years before retiring in June, 1958.

Description: The Silvio Hein Memorial Scholarship was
established in trust by the late Mrs. Hein in 1963 as a memorial to her husband
who was a musician.

Indiana State University with a major or minor in music, have been ranked in the
upper 25% of their class in music, and demonstrate special talents in musical
composition.

nomination and selection process. The faculty’s recommendation is forwarded to

Description: The Arthur D. Hill Scholarship was established
in 1986 by friends, colleagues, former students and family of Arthur DeWitt
Hill. Mr. Hill earned both the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana
State Teachers College. He served as Chairman of The Department of Music from
1940 until his retirement in 1964.

Description: The Anna Hulman Memorial Piano Scholarship was
established by friends and students of Anna Hulman who spent most of her
professional life in Terre Haute where she taught piano in her home. For many
years she served as organist and choir director at St. Benedict’s Church in
Terre Haute.

Description: The Jazz Ensemble Scholarship was established
in 1991 by Dr. John P. Spicknall, a faculty member since 1969 in the ISU

in jazz and be willing to participate in jazz ensemble or jazz combo during the
academic year in which the scholarship is awarded.

Description: The Eleanor Reid Justice Piano Scholarship was
established in 1991 by Charles J. Justice to honor his mother, Eleanor Reid
Justice. Mrs. Justice was born in Mansfield, Ohio, and began formal piano study
at the age of six at Saint Peter’s Academy in Mansfield where she completed her
degree requirements during her sophomore year of high school. After retiring in
1981, Mrs. Justice worked part-time for the Terre Haute Symphony Association
until 1988 when she moved to Bowie, Maryland.
Open To: Undergraduate music majors concentrating in piano
Selection Criteria: To be considered for this scholarship,
eligible students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, be academically
talented, and excel in musicianship and technique. The scholarship may be
awarded annually to an incoming freshman or renewed.

Description: The C. Weir and Etta B. Kirk Memorial
Scholarship was established in 1972 at the time of Mr. Kirk’s death.

Selection Criteria: Eligible students must rank in the upper
10% of their high school class in addition to being an outstanding performer.
The scholarship is a four-year award and is renewable each year provided that
the student remains a music major and maintains their academic standards.

Description: The Henry E. Meurer Music Education Scholarship
was established in 1999 by Dr. Eleanor Meurer to honor the memory of her
husband, Henry E. Meurer. Mr. Meurer received his bachelor’s degree in music
education from Indiana State University and his master’s degree in clarinet from
Chicago Musical College. An outstanding musician, band director and music
educator, he was well known throughout Indiana and the midwest.
Open To: Junior or senior music education majors
Selection Criteria: Recipient must maintain a minimum overall
GPA of 3.0 in addition to exhibiting leadership potential and superior talent in
teaching. Financial need may be a consideration.

Description: The Gertrude F. Meyer Music Scholarship was
made possible through the generosity of Miss Gertrude F. Meyer. Miss Meyer
served on the Indiana State University Department of Music faculty for 15 years
and last held the academic rank of Associate Professor of Music when she
resigned in 1961 to accept another position.

Description: The Geraldine Miller Wind/Percussion
Scholarship was established in 1998 to provide financial assistance for an
Indiana State University student who is an outstanding performer on
wind/percussion instruments.

Selection Criteria: To be selected for this award, applicants
must demonstrate outstanding performance on wind or percussion instruments.
Students must perform in a concert band organization each semester as determined
by their audition and at least one other wind/percussion division ensemble as
recommended by the Director of Bands.

Description: The Minerva Pepinsky Memorial Scholarship is
made possible through an endowment established by Dr. Joseph S. Schick, ISU
retired professor of English, who died February 1987, in memory of his friend,
Minerva Pepinsky, whose entire life was devoted to music as a concert singer,
educator, and historian. For many years Ms. Pepinsky served as an Associate
Professor of Music at Northern Illinois University.

shows the greatest promise of contributing to the world of music as a practicing
artist, educator, or historian.

Description: The Percussion House Scholarship was
established in 1977 through donations by alumni, faculty and friends of the
Indiana State University Department of Music. The award is given to a student

Description: The Stanley Petrulis Scholarship in Basson was
established in 1988 by Dr. Petrulis, bassoon instructor at Indiana State
University from 1969 until 1992. He received his Bachelor of Music degree with
the Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music, his Master of
Music degree from Catholic University of America, and his Doctor of Music degree
from Indiana University. Before entering into full-time teaching, he played
professionally in the United States Air force Band and Orchestra, the National
Symphony Orchestra, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. While teaching at
ISU, he was principal bassoonist with the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, and a
member of the ISU Faculty Woodwind Quintet. Dr. Petrulis died in March 2002.

Description: The Lisa Simpson Memorial Scholarship was
established by the family of Lisa Simpson in honor of her memory. Lisa Simpson
was an Indiana State University music student actively involved in saxophone
performance and student activities at the time of her death in 1997.

Selection Criteria: Eligible applicants must have a 3.0 GPA.
Preference will be given to a saxophone student. Financial need may also be a
consideration.

Description: The Robert Sprenkle Oboe Scholarship was
established in 1992 by J. William Denton in memory of Robert Sprenkle. Mr.
Sprenkle was the renowned principal oboist of the Rochester Philharmonic
Orchestra from 1937 to 1985. During that time he was also professor of oboe
at the Eastman School of Music, a position he served with great distinction.
Dr. Denton is a professor of oboe at Indiana State University and was a student
of Mr. Sprenkle.

the following: excellence in performance, potential for excellence in
performance, and/or significant financial need.

Description: The Lowell Mason Tilson Music Education
Memorial Scholarship was established by relatives and friends of Mr. Tilson.
Mr. Tilson served as chairperson of the Indiana State University Department of
Music for 25 years and was a pioneer of music in the public schools. Tilson
Music Hall in the ISU Tirey Memorial Union is named in his honor.

the upper half of his/her high school class. The scholarship may be renewed
provided the recipient maintains a GPA of not less than 2.2.
