Digital Art Student Exhibition Fall 2020: Becoming the Invisible Cities

The Media Realization Center (MRC) at Indiana State University is pleased to present "Digital Art Student Exhibition Fall 2020: Becoming the Invisible Cities."

In March 2020, in the middle of setting up the semesterly Digital Art Student Exhibition, the pandemic struck and Indiana State University temporarily switched to being a virtual campus.  All students were sent home, and our show, which was to feature student works made in response to the assigned reading, Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino, had to be postponed.  Before the world shut down, Calvino's Invisible Cities were remote, strange, foreign, and beyond real.  Today, they seem closer and more relatable than we could have imagined as we find ourselves in a situation that could almost have come from the book's pages.

The works shown in this exhibition may have been created before the pandemic and about an assigned book, but revisiting them today, our lives forever changed by the unbearable weight of silence everywhere, they seem immediate and vivid.

The exhibit features the emerging talents of undergraduate and graduate Visual Art students enrolled in the Intermediate, Advanced, and graduate-level Digital Art Classes, taught by Professor Sala Wong, Indiana State University Department of Art and Design.  The participating student artists are: Sarah Ahmer, Rachel Bell, Jeffrey Brickey, Cody Devine, Adam Esparza, Nina Greene, Joshua Hart, Natalee Link, Elaina Llewellyn, Bailey McWilliams, Bailee Melvin, Sam T. Morlan, Kevin Naylor, Shana Noblitt, Grant Sailes, Randi Scheffer, Owen Alexander Williams, and William Williams.

In addition to the Calvino-inspried works, the introductory-level Digital Art students will present their projects in sound and animation.  Students from the Digital Art I class are: Madison Adams, Jaynia Banks, Isaiah Baxter, A'Laya Berry-Potts, Sarah Chatman, Kaylee Glasgow, Rebecca Henry, David Lopez-Minutti, La'Tonius McClendon, Saabirah Muhammad, Ethan Newport, William Pillow, Ezra Ross, Aidan Thompson, and James White.

Separately from the exhibiton, a Zoom-based open air class with multimedia screenings will be held on Thursday, November 5 from 6 - 8 PM ET.  The public is invited to join the class on Zoom that eveing in order to view the screening and interact with the class activities.  A wide array of exciting works ranging from augmented reality (AR), 360 degree video, digital animation, video, sound, and projection mapping will be presented.

The exhibiton and Zoom livestream are free and open to the public.
