Burning Questions about the Greensburg Learning Center:
What kind of classes does the Learning Center Offer?
We offer college credit classes from a number of universities including Ivy Tech, IUPUC and Purdue (all face to face in the building.) We also work with many colleges and universities to help students take online and distance education classes here at the Learning Center.
What is the cost of a class at the Learning Center compared to a class at a University?
The cost of a class at the Learning Center is based on the individual schools tuition. For example, an Ivy Tech class is going to be around $350, a Purdue or IUPUC class is going to be around $700. However, by taking classes at the Learning Center students save in transportation costs, room and board costs, because they are living at home, and most students are able to work while taking classes at the Learning Center.
Are there any Scholarships or Grants available to students who take classes at the Learning Center?
Yes! There are many opportunities for our students to receive scholarships and grants. The first is filing for federal and state financial aid. Every year students must file a FAFSA form by March 10th to be eligible for State and Federal Financial aid as well as any Grant money or student loans. Every school offers their own scholarships and grants – students would need to speak with an advisor from their particular school to see how to apply. There are also many local scholarships available to students which can be applied to classes taken here at the Learning Center because it goes to the particular college of which the student is taking the class. There are also 2 local scholarships specifically for Greensburg Learning Center Students. One is from the Decatur County Community Foundation, and the other is called the Walter B. Lowe Scholarship.
How do I apply for classes at the Learning Center?
To apply for classes at the Learning Center, students must apply to the particular school that is offering the class they wish to take and then register for the class through the school. The Learning Center Coordinator, Rachel Sullivan, or Associate Coordinator, Bev Wilson can assist students in that process. Valorie Moorman, Purdue College of Technology, is also available to assist students who are interested in Purdue or IUPUC classes.
What is the importance of furthering my education?
It is imperative for students to continue after high school to receive some sort of further training/education. The job market and economy of today and into the future is only getting more competitive and employers are requiring and demanding much more from potential employees. Jobs that used to not require any education past high school are now requiring Associate’s and even Bachelor’s Degrees. Even companies such as GECOM and HONDA are sending their employees through training programs and helping to pay for college education because they want and demand that their employees have additional education, which is only going to make their company more effective and profitable.
