Hot Potatoes

The Hot Potatoes suite allows instructors to create interactive exercises for the Web, including:

The main purpose of the Hot Potatoes product is to make it simple for instructors to create complex interactive Web pages — exercises that present material, evaluate user responses, and provide feedback and scoring. You can produce sophisticated Web-based teaching materials without understanding anything about the code (XHTML, Cascading Stylesheets and JavaScript) behind the scenes.

How do I get Hot Potatoes for my computer?

The Hot Potatoes suite is available by download at http://web.uvic.ca/hrd/halfbaked/index.htm#downloads. This product is not freeware, but it is free of charge for those working for publicly-funded non-profit-making educational institutions and making their pages freely available on the Web.

Also, a licensed copy of Hot Potatoes is available in the CIRT digital sandbox in Normal Hall 301 for other uses.

Using Hot Potatoes with Blackboard or WebCT

According to the terms of the Hot Potatoes license agreement, anyone creating instructional material for Blackboard or Web CT--rather than making the material "freely available on the Web"--would need to finalize the material using a licensed copy. You may purchase your own licensed copy at the Half-Baked Software Web site. Or you may use the licensed copy in the CIRT digital sandbox to finalize your material.

How do I learn how to use Hot Potatoes?

You may sign up for training on Hot Potatoes on the OIT training Web site.  Also, a number of tutorials and helpful materials are available at http://web.uvic.ca/hrd/hotpot/tutorials6.htm.
