ThinkPad Maintenance: ScanDisk for Errors

ScanDisk is a Windows utility that checks to make sure your hard drive is working properly and fix any small problems before they turn into major problems.

  1. Open My Computer so that the drives are visible.

  1. Right click on C: (or another drive you would like to scan) and select Properties.

  1. On the Tools tab, click Check Now.

  1. Check the boxes next to Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors and then click Start.

  1. You may be prompted to reboot your ThinkPad before the scan can take place. Reboot and your drive will be scanned before booting into Windows. This may take several minutes.
