Special Events
In May, all principals and superintendents received the NCA Professional Development Calendar for next year. Twenty sessions on seven topics will be held around the state. In addition, we have also scheduled some webinars, including a new Improvement Series.
Administrators who want to learn more about successfully implementing school improvement may want to join us for the Continuous Improvement and the Administrator workshops that will be held September 16th at the IASP headquarters. Building and central office administrators are welcome at this free session. This workshop is now full.
As you know, the NCA/AdvancED accreditation process has changed dramatically since 2007-08. Schools still work on their school improvement plans and document results, but the Quality Assurance Review (QAR) teams will look at how schools are meeting the other standards as well. These research-based standards, drawn from a careful investigation of the effective schools studies, are the focus of Meeting the New Standards, Improving Schools workshop. Participants will examine these standards and learn how to self-assess their ability to meet them in preparation for the QAR visit. Schools who have not yet hosted a QAR visit will benefit from this free workshop.
Based on the first two years of Quality Assurance
Review data, schools are struggling most to meet three standards, so we
have designed some workshops to help schools understand these standards
and work on ways to meet them.
Standard 1: The Shared Vision
and Its Role in Continuous Improvement will look at the critical
role vision plays in school and district improvement.
While many schools have focused on creating a mission, the vision
and the activities that help create that vision are fundamental to
successful change efforts.
Creating a meaningful but concise profile will also be discussed.
Standard 4 – What’s it for?
deals with the documenting and using results standard, a problem area
for most schools. While we
are collecting data as never before, we are not using it to change
teaching and learning. This
workshop will explore ways to do just that.
Standard
7: Commitment to Continuous
Improvement will present ways to systematically and systemically
deal with the commitment to improve student learning.
In
Secondary Reading Strategies and Assessments will focus on teaching reading in the content areas at the secondary level. We will review research-based strategies, the concept of K-12 literacy planning and the selection of reading assessments.
Interest in District Accreditation continues to
grow, so if you want to know more about this level of accreditation in
some depth, you will want to attend
District Accreditation:
A Systems Approach to Improvement.
This year we are presenting two types of webinars. The first are free informational webinars. Gary Wallyn, Director of School Accreditation and Awards from the Indiana Department of Education, will conduct webinar IDOE Updates about changes and initiatives as needed throughout the year. E-mails will be sent to all principals and superintendents prior to these webinars. Dr. Joyce Fulford will conduct the Introduction to District Accreditation webinars in October and November to provide participants with a brief overview of the process. Leslie Ballard will conduct the KEYS Online Surveys and Tools webinars in September and October for districts interested in using this wonderful, research-based survey and the accompanying resources. (KEYS is available to districts whose teachers are ISTA-affiliated and whose schools are NCA accredited.)
The Improvement Series webinars may be taken as a group of five for a reduced cost or individually. The improvement Series will include School Improvement Planning, Translating the School Improvement Plan to the Classroom, Monitoring Progress, Effective Professional Development and Systemic Improvement. A blog site will be created for the Improvement Series Webinars so that participants can continue to learn and exchange ideas long after the webinar is over.
What is needed to participate in a webinar? A computer with internet access and a telephone with speaker capability if more than one person will be participating).
