The Office of Communications and Marketing is staffed with experienced media professionals who offer advice and guidance to faculty, staff and students during all stages of the news media experience.
The Media Relations team in the Office of Communications and Marketing is responsible for producing and distributing news releases and feature articles about ISU and the activities and accomplishments of its students, faculty and staff. We work closely with Photographic Services, Video Production and Web Services to tell and disseminate your stories.
Great Stories to Tell
As a unit of the Division of Enrollment Management, Marketing and Communications, and in keeping with a key element of the university’s Strategic Plan, we are especially committed to producing news releases and feature articles designed to help attract more students to the university and document programs designed to ensure the success and ultimate graduation of those students. In short, we want to tell great stories.
Great news stories have many things going for them. They’re unique, timely and have significant impact on the readers. ISU’s great news stories also involve learning opportunities for students, and they showcase ISU faculty, staff and students involvement in the community. In addition, we want to showcase original research findings, particularly if the research has a practical application or can be linked to issues of current interest.
A nationally known speaker or famous individual visiting campus for a specific purpose is also a potentially great news story, especially if the subject matter is relevant and pertains to something in the news at the moment.
The Media Relations team will focus as much effort as possible on these sorts of stories.
Routine Stories to Tell
Even if you’re story isn’t a “great” one, we’re available to help you tell it. In general, routine news items will be handled by college interns, with the assistance of the Media Relations team, for inclusion in ISU Today and feature-length articles will not be written about these items.
Routine news items include the following:
University events are publicized on ISU’s Web-based calendar of events. To be published in the calendar, events must be sponsored by an ISU entity (such as an office, department, student group, etc.), and preferably held on the ISU campus.
Calendar submissions for the Web-based calendar should include: name of event (including notation if it is part of a named lecture series), speaker's name, speaker's affiliation, one or two sentences of information on the speaker, date and time of event, location, applicable fees where appropriate, and a contact person with phone number and e-mail address. To submit calendar information, please complete the web form located at http://calendar.indstate.edu/MasterCalendar/AddEvent.aspx.
In some instances, Media Relations may determine that a separate news release focusing on an externally important event may be appropriate. Such events must be open to the public and sponsored by an ISU entity (such as a department, office, student group, etc.).
