Disability Awareness @ ISU

Roadmap to Disabilities

"Successful advocates are individuals who have successfully raised awareness that has resulted in inspiring change to the status quo."   -- Claudia Slater, Director of Public Affairs, Westchester (NY) Disabled on the Move, Inc.

The downward turns of the nation’s economy make services for persons with disabilities that much more difficult to maintain. Funding to many agencies is being decreased by significant amounts. Changes are being made in legislation covering what governmental agencies can and will provide.

Numerous articles in the media consistently report about the high unemployment rates throughout the country. An unfortunate truth is that among people with disabilities, these rates are so much higher than what is covered in these same media reports.

It is imperative that agencies serving special populations strive to develop more collaborative and cooperative methods of getting the word out about services that are available for their clients and their families. We hope to come out of this discussion with the beginnings of a document that will describe the goals, services and contact information of these various agencies that can be made available to area residents. Some networks are already in place – you may or may not be aware of them.

The Disability Committee of Indiana State University (ISU) and our sponsoring departments and organizations invite your participation in a facilitated roundtable discussion: "Road Map to Disability Resources:  What’s Available for the Disabled in the Wabash Valley?" on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the Cunningham Memorial Library on the ISU campus beginning at 5:30 p.m. and ending at 7:30 p.m.

In conjunction with Indiana's celebration of March as "Disability Awareness Month" an agency fair in the Library's Events Area is being hosted by the ISU Library. Tables will be provided for displaying your materials prior to and during the discussion. Any local agency wanting to make arrangements to provide a table/booth with information about their services please contact Carol Jinbo at 812-237-2574 or e-mail her at cjinbo@isugw.indstate.edubefore March 20th so that a table may be reserved ahead of time.

Representatives who would like to volunteer to participate in the panel discussion or have questions for consideration in the discussion, should contact Marlene Lu at 812-237-2842 or e-mail her at mlu3@isugw.indstate.edu.
