The Knowledge Portal is the U.S. Army's new online
resource that will enable active and retired personnel
to access hundreds of Army internal sites, servers, and
resources. With a storage capacity three times the
size of the Library of Congress' site, this portal
willl serve approximately one to three million users.
Information will be customized to a person's rank,
experience, location, and duties. Services will include:
instant messaging, e-mail, access to relevant military
information and much more.

University of Phoenix is expanding again - this time
to Illinois, specifically the Chicago commuter market.
Phoenix also has signed with American Online to provide
educational content to users of AOL, CompuServ, and
Netscape. Through this alliance, Phoenix will offer
20 degree programs in business, technology, nursing,
and education.

China recently purchased a $9.67 million education
platform to deliver distance education.

IBM and the University of Pennsylvania are
developing a computing grid that will aid and
streamline the diagnosis of breast cancer. The
GRID will connect hospitals through secure Internet
portals that enable doctors to upload and analyze
digitized mammograms. Physicians will be able to
call up all of a patient's vital data very quickly,
and be less reliant on expensive x-ray film.

NCS Pearson will manage the Navy College Program for
Afloat College Education (NCPACE). This program will
deliver post-secondary education to U.S. sailors deployed
worldwide via a centralized e-Learning web portal and
other electronic media, such as CD-ROMs.

Blackboard has set up a government solutions group
to meet the government's rising demand for e-learning
applications. Targeted groups include federal, state,
and local agencies.

Pearson PLC announced a new venture with Cyber Solutions
Ltd and China Central Television (the biggest television
broadcaster in China) to provide education and publishing
service to 350 million television households in China. With
start-up schedule for March 2002, initial offerings will
include four TV series on conversational English for
Cantonese and Mandarin speakers. Programs will include
print, online, and audio course materials published by
Pearson units, including Simon & Schuster and Addison Wesley
Longman. The venture will also provide broadband services,
including self-study English-language course materials.

The Library of Congress has launched a new Web site that
will provide unique data for 49 countries. Dubbed "Portals
to the World," the project plans to a have a Web page for
each country in the world by 2003.

New York University will close NYU Online, its for-
profit Internet learning venture. Selected activities will
be moved to its School of Continuing and Professional
Studies. Officials at NYU cite economic reasons for the
closing, specifically the steep decline in share prices for
Internet companies. NYU was the first large nonprofit
university to create a for-profit venture to market and
deliver online courses. Other ventures, such as Fathom
(Columbia University's nonprofit venture into online
learning) have scaled back operations, and also try to
reduce costs by teaming with other organizations, including
museums.
