Experiential Learning
by Faye Bradshaw, ISU Instructional Designer

It is an on-going struggle to move students from the simple retention of knowledge to a level of critical reflection and analysis of real-world problems. One way to move beyond the simple rote memorization of facts and concepts is to structure online lessons in a format that assures that learning will occur.

One method that is particularly useful is Kolb's Experiential Learning Model. According to Kolb, learning takes place when the following processes occur:

Concrete Experiences are low-level abstractions or actual things that students use to discover broader ideas.

Reflective Observation means giving students a chance to ponder the meaning of new ideas and how those new ideas relate to their lives.

Abstract Conceptualization refers to understanding broad concepts and theories that are learned typically through lectures.

Active Experimentation allows students to utilize theories and concepts and manipulatives to make decisions or solve problems.

How do these processes play out in an online course environment?

See the following example of some of the types of learning activities that can be used in a learning module created using Kolb's Experiential Learning Model.

EXAMPLE

Socialization: The Life Cycle

I. Concrete Experience: Show the videotape titled "The Life Cycle."

II. Reflective Observation: Ask students to create a Reflective Journal. Specifically, after watching the videotape "The Life Cycle," provide students with the following questions to guide their journal writing:

  1. What stages of the life cycle have you passed through?
  2. List and briefly describe each stage.

III. Abstract Conceptualization: Lecture on "Theories and Concepts on Aging." Based on this lecture, create a concept map showing the linkages between the various theories and their related concepts.

IV. Active Experimentation: Ask students to create and conduct a research survey on attitudes toward aging.
