Thinking about making the transition from classroom to online teaching? Concerned about whether you can master the WebCT course management system? If so, you will find the answers to these questions and many more in "The Ultimate WebCT Handbook" published by the Division of Distance and Distributed Learning at Georgia State University.

"The Ultimate WebCT Handbook" is a practical guide to designing, developing, and managing an online course. It is a guide that can be used by faculty members and course developers. The handbook is arranged chronologically; that is, in the order in which you would proceed if you were just starting to think about creating a course in WebCT.

This handbook provides step-by-step instructions for storyboarding or planning a course from start to finish. Practical guides for using WebCT and promoting interaction are included. Information on adding multimedia to an online course is laid out in a manner appropriate for novice through advanced users. Checklists and sample forms are included to help keep you on track with the course development process.

So, follow their 10 minute rule. If you can't figure something out after 10 minutes, then consult this excellent resource for creating a superior online learning experience for all of your students.

IPSE GRANT PROPOSALS 2002-2003

It is time once again to prepare proposals for the IPSE Module and Course Development Grant program. In the past, ISU has been very successful in competing for course development grants from the Indiana Partnership for Statewide Education (IPSE). This year the funding is a maximum of $15,000 per module and $20,000 per course.

The proposal application deadline is January 20, 2003.

The Partnership has identified three tracks of requirements for awards for the proposals:

  1. Modules or courses that support workforce development or non-credit modules,
  2. General education courses applicable at more than one institution, or modules which may be part of such course, and
  3. Other proposals which do not fit the above categories, but which the proposer feels merit consideration because of audience need or other compelling reasons.

Etcetera, Etcetera, Etcetera: ISU News, Interesting Links and So Forth

An online science course and lab (conducted in each student's kitchen) is helping non-science majors and first-semester students earn credit - and get a taste for chemistry. The course and lab was developed by two professors: Doris R. Kimbrough (University of Colorado at Denver) and Jimmy Reeves (University of North Carolina at Wilmington). According to Ms. Kimbrough, the course "....really gives them [students] the sense that chemistry is not just something that happens in a chemistry lab -- that it goes on all the time. And as a science teacher, that's pretty exciting."

The Scout Report is one of the most valuable online resources for current research. A free, opt-in email newsletter is published every Friday. Resources are researched, selected, and annotated by a team of librarians and subject matter expert. Best of all, the site's "Search" feature enables browsers to locate materials by key words. This project is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

The Scout Portal Toolkit allows groups or organizations "...to catalog and disseminate their collections or resources via the World Wide Web without a significant outlay of technical resources or expertise. SPT's metadata tool comes packaged with Dublin Core fields which can be modified easily to fit a collection's specific needs. Other features include a flexible interface (through separation of PHP and HTML), privilege settings and workflow management features. Also of interest are a recommender system, reader ratings and comments, and a Google-like search engine. SPT was built with special attention paid to accessibility issues, in order to make it more useful to all users, including those with disabilities. Persons hoping to take advantage of this excellent (and free) Toolkit will need to have access to a web server that supports PHP and MySQL, preferably running Linux and Apache."
