ISU Partnership Programs: An Update

The following offers an update on ISU partnership programs with two-year colleges and universities in Indiana and Illinois.

For more information, contact Dr. Tom Sawyer at 237-2333 or pmsawyr@isugw.indstate.edu

VU-ISU Dual Admission Agreement:
Beginning Fall 2002, Indiana State University and Vincennes University entered into a Dual Admission Agreement that allows VU students to be admitted simultaneously to ISU if they select the dual admission option. The goal is to provide VU students with a smooth transition to ISU upon graduation from VU. As of March 2003, nearly 200 VU students have chosen this option.

Other Dual Admission Agreements in the Works:
Negotiations are underway for four new dual admission agreements with the following two-year institutions:
(1) Ivy Tech State College; (2) Lake Land College;
(3) Illinois Eastern Community College District; and
(4) the Chicago Community College District.

The Ivy Tech Dual Admission Agreement will be operational for the 2004 recruiting season.

New ISU Presence on the VU Campus:
Effective April 9, 2003, Indiana State University opened a new Enrollment Services Office on the Vincennes University campus. Heather Marchino has been selected to be the first ISU Enrollment Services Coordinator to staff this new office. Ms. Marchino will assist in the development of the new DegreeLink Enhancement Program and other ISU-VU partnership programs.

The DegreeLink Enhancement Program, scheduled to begin Fall 2003, enables VU graduates to remain on the VU campus and complete an ISU bachelor's degree through a combination of distance learning and face-to-face courses offered on the VU campus. Initially three ISU bachelor-degree completion programs will be offered: Business Administration; Criminology; and Human Resource Development.

New Partnership Program:
Ivy Tech Bloomington and the ISU Department of Aerospace Technology have developed a unique associate degree program. The program will be housed in Bloomington. Ivy Tech will offer all the general education courses and ISU will offer all aviation courses. Participating students will be admitted as ISU students and will be awarded an ISU associate of science in general aviation flight technology upon successful completion of program requirements.

Expansion of Illinois Fee Waiver:
In January 2003, the ISU Board of Trustees approved a proposal to expand the tri-county waiver to include an additional 17 counties. As a result, effective with the fall 2003 semester, students in the following 20 Illinois counties will be eligible for the waiver: Clark, Clay, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, Douglas, Edgar, Edwards, Effingham, Franklin, Hamilton, Jasper, Lawrence, Moultrie, Richland, Shelby, Vermilion, Wabash, Wayne, and White.

This waiver includes all students within these counties as well as all graduates from our six community college partners in Illinois:

  • Danville Area Community College
  • Lake Land College (Mattoon)
  • Four campuses of the Illinois Eastern Community College System: Frontier Community College (Fairfield); Lincoln Trail College (Robinson); Olney Central College; and Wabash Valley College (Mount Carmel)

Further, expansion of the waiver is being reviewed to include Cooke County and its adjacent counties.

Internet Learning Escalates in Indiana

The Indiana College Network reports that distance learning enrollments increased by more than 40 percent - to 48,000 - for the 2001-02 academic year. This adds up to a 130 percent increase in enrollments since 2000. When final figures are tallied, a 25 percent increase is anticipated for Spring 2003.

ICN is a service of the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS), a consortium of higher education institutions in Indiana that includes the seven public colleges and universities as well as 31 independent colleges and universities.

"Learners consistently tell us they appreciate the flexibility and convenience of electronic learning to fit their busy lives," reports Susan Scott, IHETS' director for ICN. "We saw more enrollments in Internet courses this past year than in total enrollments the previous year. At this point, 80 percent of all course enrollments are online - nearly 38,500."

In addition to the Internet, courses are also delivered via satellite television, videotape, two-way interactive videoconferencing, CD-ROM, and cable/public television.

ICN currently lists over 2,000 distance courses and 134 degree and certificate programs available at a distance. The ICN Web site is available at www.icn.org

IHETS members include Ball State University, Independent Colleges of Indiana, Indiana State University, Indiana University, Ivy Tech State College, Purdue University, University of Southern Indiana, and Vincennes University.

Say good-bye to #2 pencils - and hello to computerized standardized tests. First Idaho and Virginia - and now Oregon - are moving standardized testing programs to computer-based exams rather than paper-and-pencil tests. Officials state that students (even third graders) are comfortable using the technology and doing well. The benefits include cost-effectiveness and the almost immediate feedback available to students.
