PROFILE: ISU DISTANCE LEARNERS

Fall 2006 enrollments in ISU distance learning courses set a record high. Headcount (unduplicated) in ISU distance courses reached 2,418 students, generating a total of 3,898 enrollments (and 11,426 credit hours).

To understand this increase, it is important to note who enrolls in ISU distance courses. The profile (below) is based on the University's Fall 2006 Enrollment Summary.

Profile

Of the 2,418 students enrolled in distance learning, the majority are:

  • Undergraduates (60.5%)
  • Over the age of 25 (65%)
  • Women (60%)
  • Distance-only students (59%)

The majority (65%) live outside of Vigo and its six surrounding counties (Clay, Greene, Owen, Putnam, Sullivan and Vermillion).

I.  Enrollment by Level:

  • Undergraduate: 60.5%
  • Graduate: 39.5%

II.  Status:

  • Full-time undergrad: 35.5%
  • Part-time undergrad: 25%
  • Full-time grad: 8%
  • Part-time grad: 31.5%

III.  Average Age:

  • Undergraduates:  28 years
  • Graduates:  36 years

IV.  State:

  • Indiana (69%)
  • Out-of-State: (31%)

COMPUTER-BASED TRAINING AVAILABLE TO ISU COMMUNITY

The University's Center for Instruction, Research, and Technology has self-paced computer-based training (CBT) modules available from the Makau Corporation.

These cover more than 40 products and are available to all current ISU faculty, staff, and students.

Course topics include training in:

  • Desktop and multimedia applications
  • Web design and programming
  • Network and system administration
  • Preparation for certification examinations

Students and faculty may find this resource useful as a supplement to their classroom instruction. It also provides ISU staff with training that they can incorporate into their professional development plan.

PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE

ISU faculty members who are interested in developing courses (including general education) for distance programs may benefit from the array of services offered by the University's Office of Distance Support Services.
