In 1947, the Driver Education Program was established as a teacher education program.
Through the years, the faculty and staff have implemented programs in the following areas: Teacher Preparation, Learn to Drive, Motorcycle Rider Education, Commercial Driver Licensing testing, special population testing and evaluations for Union Hospital, Continental Rehabilitation, and other agencies.
Other special projects have included driver training for emergency vehicle operators, bus driver evaluation, van driver evaluations, and special need drivers by training or adapting equipment for the vehicle.
The staff has administered programs for the Indiana Department of
Education, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, City of Terre Haute and others. It
has provided facilities and programs for the Indiana State Police, Vigo
County Extension Office, Vigo County Fair Board, America Veterans of
Foreign Wars (AMVETTS), Lion's Club, Army Reserve Center, National
Guard, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Motorcycle Safety Foundation,
University Student Union Board, and local businesses.
