Research Opportunities within Ecology and Organismal Biology

The Department of Ecology and Organismal Biology faculty and the affiliated faculty in Life Sciences, Science Education, and Geography, Geology, and Anthropology maintain a large number of active research projects.  Virtually all of our grant and contract funded research as well as University sponsored research is conducted in close collaboration with our undergraduate and graduate students.

The Department of Ecology and Organismal Biology has two major areas of research specialization:

Some faculty members conduct research in more than one specialization.  Please visit individual faculty web pages for more specific details and for copies of their recent publications (in PDF format).  Click on a faculty name below to go to their home page!

Ecology

·    Charles J. Amlaner, Jr. - Chairperson; Behavioral Physiology: biotelemetry; temporal and spatial patterns of behavior and physiology in unrestrained animals. Sleep physiology of free-ranging animals. Optimality theory as related to behavior.

·    Michael J. Angilletta, Jr.  - Physiological Ecology & Evolution: energetics of ectotherms; evolution of life histories; thermoregulation and physiological performance.

·    George S. Bakken - Physiological Ecology: energetics,  biometeorology, thermoregulatory behavior, evolution.

·    Diana K. Hews - Field Behavioral Endocrinology: hormonal control of sexual dimorphism in territorial aggression and color signals; sexual selection, hormones and alternative reproductive mating tactics; color signals and social communication.

·    Steven L. Lima - Behavioral & Evolutionary Ecology; predator-prey interactions; spatial predator-prey games; avian ecology; conservation biology.

·    William A. Mitchell - Behavioral Ecology; community dynamics and mathematical modeling; determinants of species richness and spatial predator-prey games.

·    Peter E. Scott - Plant Reproductive Ecology: interactions of plants and pollinators; avian ecology; conservation biology.

·    John O. Whitaker, Jr. - Vertebrate Ecology: mammalogy, especially studies of food and ectoparasites of small mammals; bat biology; systematics.

Physiology

·    Charles J. Amlaner, Jr. - Chairperson; Behavioral Physiology: biotelemetry; temporal and spatial patterns of behavior and physiology in unrestrained animals. Sleep physiology of free-ranging animals. Optimality theory as related to behavior.
