Department of Ecology and Organismal Biology Scholarships

Three different scholarships are awarded annually: the Hopp Memorial Scholarship, the Munsee Scholarship in Ecology, and the Stanley Scholarship. Information about eligibility requirements, selection criteria, and the application process is listed below. Additional Scholarship information may be obtained from the College of Arts and Sciences.

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS FEBRUARY 15, 2006. Applications forms should be delivered to the Departmental Office (Science 283).

 

Scholarship Name: Dr. William B. Hopp Memorial Scholarship

Description:    This scholarship honors long-time Indiana State University faculty member and radio and television host, Dr. William Hopp.  Dr. Hopp graduated from Garfield High School and earned a bachelor's degree in science from Indiana Teachers College.  He earned master's and doctorate degrees from Purdue University.  For three decades Dr. Hopp's weekly television show was broadcast to Wabash Valley residents, introducing them to all manner of wildlife.

Eligibility:  Open to undergraduate or graduate students in Ecology and Organismal Biology with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Selection Criteria:

  • Must submit a short essay (1-2 paragraphs) describing how the scholarship will benefit the applicant’s pursuit of a career in biology. 
  • The committee will review the applicant's academic performance up to the date of application.

Scholarship Name: Jack Munsee Scholarship in Ecology

Description:    This scholarship honors Dr. Jack Munsee.  Dr. Munsee was a Professor in Life Sciences from 1959 to 1987.  He was very active with a number of environmental organizations and supported many conservation causes throughout his career.  The recipient will be a freshman with financial need majoring in environmental or ecological studies.  This scholarship remains renewable if at least a 2.5 GPA is maintained by the current recipient.

Eligibility:  Open to freshman students in Ecology and Organismal Biology with an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Selection Criteria:

  • Must submit a short essay (1-2 paragraphs) describing how the scholarship will benefit the applicant’s pursuit of a career in biology. 
  • The committee will review the applicant's academic performance up to the date of application.

Award Amount: $3000-5000 per year

Donald and Mary Jo Stanley Scholarship for Ecology and Organismal Biology Majors (4 scholarships/year)  & the Donald and Mary Jo Stanley Scholarship for Science Teaching Majors (2 scholarships/year)
     These scholarships were established by Mary Jo Stanley in 1989 in memory of her husband, Donald Stanley.  A native of Terre Haute, Mr. Stanley earned a Baccalaureate degree in 1931 and a Master’s degree in 1945 from Indiana State.  He was a teacher and principal at Fairmount High School prior to accepting a position as a food chemist with Campbell Soup Company.  He retired from Campbell Soup in 1973 as Assistant Director of Project Standards.  Mrs. Stanley is a native of Peru, Indiana, and was graduated from Chili High School and Central Business College.  She was employed as a secretary by Peerless Electric Supply Company for many years, later retiring from the Indiana Employment Security Division after 28 years of service.

Eligibility To be eligible, the student must meet the following criteria

  • Be a citizen of the United States, an Indiana resident, or a resident in one of the following Illinois counties: Clark, Crawford, or Edgar.
  • Be a science education major or a science major taking at least twelve (12) credit hours each semester at Indiana State University.
  • Students must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.75 and a science major grade point average of 3.00 or above. If applying for the Professional Practice Semester, students must have minimum overall grade point average of 3.00, as well as a science major grade point average of 3.00 or above. First semester freshman must rank in the upper 25% of high school class.
  • Maintain an overall ISU grade point average of 3.00 or higher, and a 3.00 or higher grade point average in each area of science.
  • Have financial need (provide copy of your Free Application for Federal Student Aid [FAFSA] or last year’s completed federal tax return).
  • Should not use tobacco, controlled drugs, or alcohol.
  • Should not participate in intercollegiate athletics.
  • Should provide two letters of reference – only one from a professor/instructor.

  • PLEASE NOTE:  In most cases, the scholarship is for one academic year, provided the minimum grade point average is maintained at the end of the term for which scholarship was originally awarded.  Students must reapply each year. Only one Professional Practice scholarship, usually carrying a higher dollar amount, is awarded per academic year.  If the Professional Practice semester is the spring semester, students must also apply for the general scholarship for fall semester classes. Ecology and Organismal Biology has available 4 Stanley Scholarships. Science Education has available two $500 Stanley Scholarships for Science Teaching Majors at the sophomore, junior, and senior levels; and one $1,000 Stanley Scholarship for the student teaching semester.
