Academic Programs

Degrees Offered

The Department of Ecology and Organismal Biology and the Department of Life Sciences jointly offer one general curriculum leading to a bachelor of science or a bachelor of arts degree with specialties in a chosen area of life sciences, clinical laboratory science, or science education. Candidates for either degree must successfully complete the University requirement of a minimum of 124 semester hours of credit, which includes 42-57 hours of General Education course work, and the requirements of the department.  A bachelor of arts degree is granted upon the completion of two years, or the equivalent, of a foreign language in addition to the requirements for the bachelor of science degree. A minor is not required for either a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science degree.

A bachelor of science or bachelor of arts degree in science education is awarded after completion of the Ecology and Organismal Biology curriculum including the required education courses. Four‑year, degree programs are available to students who plan to enter medical and veterinary schools.  Consult the Catalog index for the location of these preprofessional or special curricular patterns.

The Department of Ecology and Organismal Biology and the Department of Life Sciences jointly administer the core courses in the biological sciences (BIOL) required for the Life Sciences major or minor, and the courses in the optional biological sciences capstone sequence. The departments each offer their respective electives (ECOL, for Ecology and Organismal Biology; LIFS for Department of Life Sciences), many of which fulfill elective requirements for the Ecology and Organismal Biology major. These departments also offer non-majors courses for general education credit or professional credit in the Nursing program.
