Elementary, Early and Special Education

Elementary Education (Graduate)

Completion of the Master of Education Degree in Eementary Education qualifies the student for the Indiana Professional License in elementary education provided the student holds the Standard Elementary License and has completed five years of teaching experience in accredited elementary schools. Students seeking to professionalize an Indiana Standard Teaching License (Rules 46-47) must complete all requirements and submit the application for license to the Indiana Professional Standards Board no later than June 30, 2006.

Degree Requirements

Basic Professional Courses: Curriculum, Instruction, and MediaTechnology 610—3 hrs.; 3 hours from Educational Leadership, Administration, and Foundations 605, 607, or 608—3 hrs.; 3 hours from Educational Psychology 521, 625, or Curriculum, Instruction, and Media Technology 611—3 hrs.

Major Area: Elementary Education 660—3 hrs.; 6 hours from the following: Elementary Education 545, 650 or 651, 666, 671, 680, 686, or 688, Science Education 685; Elementary Education 667— 3 hrs., to be scheduled within the last 9 hours of the degree program.

Related Studies: A 3-hour elective from the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education will be required unless the student needs 12 semester hours for a teaching minor endorsement. Courses may be taken as approved by advisor to professionalize an undergraduate minor or endorsement, to develop a special interest in a subject area, or to further professional and/or general education—11 hrs.

Culminating Experience: Elementary Education 667 from the major area taken within the last 9 hours of the degree program. A minimum of 12 hours from the Department of Elementary and Early Childhood Education is required. In general, one-half of the credit hours must be courses numbered 600 or above.
