Thinking Through the Text

The Triangle of Comprehension

 is composed of Learners, Educators, and Content Area Reading Materials, which together form a united model of learning.

What Is It?  Thinking Through the Text is a unique professional development opportunity for teachers of grades 6 through 12. This standards-guided, performance assessed professional development will focus on content-area literacy.

When and Where?  Classes at the ISU site will meet June 4th – 8th, from 9:00 – 4:00. Classes for the Indianapolis site, will meet June 18th – 22nd, from 9:00 – 4:00 at Sommers Mansion, 3630 Cold Springs Road, Indianapolis.

Classes will conclude, and grades awarded, at the end of the Spring ‘08 semester.

Who Is Invited?  Classrooms teachers of children in grades 6 through 12 (including special education teachers). Requirements: Access to technology, basic technology skills which include but not limited to ability to use the web, e-mail, and access Blackboard. Other requirements include the ability to complete independent projects through the academic school year. You need to be a classroom teacher with a contract for the 2007-08 school year.

Why?  Thinking Through the Text participants will improve student content-area reading capabilities and assist them in meeting state standards. Attributes of Thinking Through Text include:

  • On-going emphasis placed on reading comprehension strategies and study skills.
  • Continued development of students’ higher order thinking skills
  • Support of active engagement and involvement of teachers, parents and communities.
  • Integrating a comprehensive approach of inquiry with elements of school reform.

Is There Any Additional Compensation for Participation?  Thinking Through the Text participants will receive three hours of graduate credit at no cost. The grant pays for registration, Graduate School application fee and technology fees. The grant does not pay for late registration fees. Grades are posted at the end of the project year. Since this is an EESE graduate course, this will also transfer into the EESE Masters Program.
