Speaker Series

Landini, Richard

Landini, RichardThe Landini Memorial Speakers Series was established in 2007 as a tribute to former Professor of English and President of Indiana State University, Richard Landini. The series was also established to extend the long-standing commitment of the Department of English to periodical programs on literature, language, and culture--a commitment that began with the Always on Friday symposia that began in the late 1960's and continued until 2007. The Landini Memorial Speakers Series presents a monthly forum for English faculty, visiting scholars and writers, and university colleagues to share expertise both formally and informally.

Events

  • Dr. Harriet Hudson, Professor of English and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences will deliver the last program of the season in the Landini Memorial Speakers Series. Her talk is entitled “Great Kindness is in Hounds”: Dogs and Men in Medieval English Romance. Of the program, Hudson writes: "As the adage says, “A dog is a man’s best friend.” The story of the faithful hound is as old as the Odyssey and as current as Terre Haute’s own Stiffy Green. It also appears in popular tales of knighthood from the later Middle Ages. Only three English romances pay much attention to dogs—Sir Tristrem, and the familiar Sir Tryamour and Sir Gowther—each of which concerns a different kind of chivalric masculinity, whether military, courtly, or pious. The dogs are essential elements in these constructions of manliness." The program is at 3:30 on Thursday, April 29, in Root Hall A-264. The event is free and open to the public.
