ISU:
Investing in Satisfaction and Understanding
The rules of work are
changing. We’re being judged by a new yardstick: not
just by how smart we are, or by our training and
experience, but also in the way we handle ourselves and
each other. - Goleman, 1998

Investing in
Satisfaction and
Understanding
Statisticians refer to a
phenomenon of
"regressing to the mean"
as a condition where
individual and
organizational
performance and outcomes
move toward statistical
"normalcy" or average
over time when "things"
are left to themselves.
In the case of ISU, it
can be assumed that the
quality of programming,
support and services we
offer students and other
constituents are fairly
equal to those offered
by other institutions of
higher education in the
state and across the
region.

But when one considers
the current economic
condition of the state,
demands for more highly
qualified graduates
entering the workforce,

educational institutions
available to students,
and a smaller pool of
potential students from
which to draw, it is
easy to see that
"average" is no longer
sufficient to assure
quality programming and
institutional longevity.
For these reasons,
Indiana State University
is moving toward an
intentional program of
employee training in the
three overlapping yet
distinct areas of
Specific information
regarding each of the
training areas can be

one of the three areas

It is imperative that
we approach the issue of professional training and
development using the same principles of good
