Class Description:

Come learn how to play 3 different song styles from Brazil, Cuba and West Africa. We have an array of drums and hand-held percussion instruments for you to use. Conceived as a fun and low-pressure class, sessions will focus on group drumming, rhythmic organization, playing techniques, and musical expression. Designed for a range of abilities, previous experience with percussion or music reading is welcome but not required nor necessary. Music is taught within an oral tradition that utilizes direct demonstration and visual/aural cues, calling upon the student to merely listen, imitate, and gradually progress, eventually learning to attune with the group. Musical selections change every session, and beginning to advanced students are welcome as there are parts for everyone!

Students will have the option to perform Brazilian street music in the ISU Homecoming Parade on Saturday Oct. 17th. Family members, local music teachers and friends of any age can join in with these musicians for the homecoming parade, but must let CSA know by Oct. 7, attend the final rehearsals on Wednesday evening, Oct. 14 and one short Saturday morning practice on Oct. 17 (the day of the parade) to learn and practice your parts. Hand made percussion instruments will be provided.
