COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTS

The faculty for the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences has provided leadership in interdisciplinary projects across campus.
Specific examples include the collaboration of Interior Design and
University Facilities Management and a summer workshop on aging taught
cooperatively Food and Nutrition faculty and  the Department of
Sociology.  The Department was a strategic member of an
interdisciplinary research effort with the Department of Psychology
related to rural health.  Several projects have been completed involving
faculty from Food and Nutrition, Human Performance and Nursing.
Partnerships with local businesses, provide faculty and students
up-to-date information about the real world of professional employment.
A highly successful four-year partnership with Doughmakers, LLC., a
local bakeware business has resulted in student scholarships, hands-on
student experiences with testing products and funds for the FCS
Foundation.  This partnership has been featured on television, radio,
and was included in the 2002-2003 President's Yearly Report, "A Year
of Refinement, Serving the Future."  Leadership for the
interdisciplinary World Food Day events is provided by the Nutrition
faculty which is a highly visible activity on the ISU campus.  In 2003,
this was a collaborative project across campus.  Over 2500 pounds of
food was collected and given to Catholic Charities. In addition, the
Food and Nutrition faculty have worked closely with the ISU Employee
Assistance Program offering workshops for faculty on weight control,
modified diets and nutrition for wellness.  Also, highlighted in this
report:  the CDFL students studying to be child life specialists
benefited from a unique partnership with Methodist Hospital in
Indianapolis.  The department was one of four units involved in the
International Opportunities 2000 Conference.  Eleven International
guests from NIS & Russia were hosted on campus and developed cooperative
agreements with Family and Consumer Sciences, Social Work, School of
Technology, and School of Nursing.  Additional linkages beyond the
