Graduate offerings in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences are designed (1) to meet the needs of students desiring specialization in an area of family and consumer sciences as preparation for professional careers in college and university teaching, business, health care, service, and design and (2) to meet the needs of family and consumer sciences teachers desiring additional preparation for teaching and the completion of the requirements for professionalizing an Indiana Teaching License.

Master of Science: Family and Consumer Sciences (32 semester hours minimum)

Research: Curriculum, Instruction, and Media Technology 61O--3 hrs.

Major: 18 hours in family and consumer sciences. Students may select (1) an area of specialization-family and consumer sciences education; child development and family life; food and nutrition; or textiles, apparel, or design (2) an inter-area option comprised of courses from two or more of the above listed areas of specialization.

Other Requirements: 3 additional hours of graduate study outside the department.

Electives: 8 hours.

Culminating Experience: A thesis or a comprehensive written examination, followed by an oral defense.

 In general, one-half of the credit hours must be in courses numbered 600 or above.

 

Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences with Specialization in Dietetics (32 hours of graduate work and 24 hours of undergraduate clinical and coordinated courses minimum)

Research: FMT 610--3 hrs or Counseling 620 -- 3 hrs.

Major: 521-4 hrs.; 523-- 5 hrs.; 530--5 hrs.; 13 hours of food and nutrition electives -- at least 9 of which must be 600 level.

Other Requirements: 3 additional hours of 600- level graduate study outside the department.

Clinical and Coordinated Component: 324-- 2 hrs.; 325-- 1 hr.; 332 --2 hrs.; 333-- 2 hrs.; 422-- 3 hrs, 424 -- 5 hrs, 431-- 6 hrs, 435-- 2 hrs.

Culminating Experience: A thesis or a comprehensive written examination followed by an oral defense.

A student entering the program without undergraduate deficiencies should be able to complete the M.S. and preprofessional practice in two calendar years. If students do not have the appropriate background they will be required to complete the following undergraduate deficiencies (or their equivalents) in order to meet American Dietetics Association Registration eligibilitv requirements:

 Food and Nutrition: 221-3 hrs. (Intro to Nutrition): 226-3 hrs. (Fund.Foods): 320 -1 hr (Orientation to Dietetics)322-3 hrs. (Nutr. Methodology). (C+ or better in each class)

Chemistry: 103-3 hrs.: 103L-1 hr. (Elementary Chem I): 104-3 hrs.: 104L- 1 hr. (Elementary Organic and Biochem): 330 - 4 hrs. (Physiological Chem)

Life Science: 241-2 hrs.: 241L -1 hr. (Anatomy and Physiology): Life Sciences 274 - 2 hrs 274L - 1 hr. (Microbiology)

Social and behavioral sciences: 9 hrs.

Other Deficiencies may be met by taking the following graduate courses:

FCS 520 (Advanced Nutrition)

FCS 528 (Food Science)

Master of Science (For Teacher Licensure in Family and Consumer Sciences

(32 semester hours minimum)

Research: Curriculum, Instruction, and Media Technology 610-- 3 hrs.

Major: 694-- 3 hrs.; 695-- 3 hrs.; an additional 18 hours in family and consumer sciences in (1) an area of specialization- family and consumer sciences education; child development and family life; food and nutrition; or textiles, apparel, or design-- or (2) an inter-area option comprised of courses from two or more of the above listed areas of specialization.

Other Requirements: Educational Leadership, Administration, and Foundations 605, 607, or 608-- 3 hrs.

Electives: 2 hours.

Culminating Experience: A thesis or a comprehensive written examination, followed by an oral defense.

 This program is designed for individuals who have completed a teacher preparation program; it does not lead to an initial teaching license.

 In general, one-half of the credit hours must be in courses numbered 600 or above.
