Family and Consumer Sciences

Indiana State University graduates have been recognized at local, state and national levels.  The faculty in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is proud of the accomplishments of their students. A CDFL student, Anita Mutterspaugh received the Hines Memorial medal as ISU’s outstanding senior. FCS majors have been awarded the Hines Medal awarded at commencement for graduates with the highest grade point average. Currently, three departmental majors are Presidential Scholars. In the past few years, the number of students eligible (3.0 GPA) for membership in the departmental honorary Phi Upsilon Omicron has increased. We now offer two initiation opportunities, fall and spring, to accommodate the increase of inductees.

In the past five years, Undergraduate Dietetics and Education students received the following:

  • Four were finalist for the Alan C. Rankin Award and one student received the Rank Award.

  • Six won awards in the Student Research Showcase

  • Several graduated with honors or high honors

  • One dietetics senior was recognized as the Outstanding Dietetics Student in a Coordinated Program in Indiana.

  • One dietetics senior received the outstanding Undergraduate Research Award for the Indiana Public Health Association

  • Each year an Education major has received a scholarship from the Indiana Association of Family and Consumer Sciences

  • In April, Jeff Novick was presented the Indiana Award for “Research in Public Health” by the Indiana Public Health Association

The Interior Design Program has annually entered student projects into the Indiana Kitchen Design Contest sponsored by the Indiana Chapter National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). Students are traditionally awarded first, second, and third prizes for their university. In 2002, one student won first prize for the State of Indiana and two students were awarded the first and second prizes for ISU.

The seniors of the FCS program enjoy nearly 100% employment after graduation. Many have found professional positions before graduations.
