Family and Consumer Sciences

Dr. Frederica Kramer

Chairperson, Professor, Teacher Education

Degrees: BS and MS from Indiana State University, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and Ph.D. in Education from Purdue University

Expertise and Activity Statement : Dr. Kramer is Chairperson of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. She has over 35 years experience in teacher education. Also, she teaches the freshman core course FCS 107, Contemporary and Historical Aspects of Family and Consumer Sciences. Her primary teaching responsibility is in the summer when she teaches such graduate courses as: Curriculum Development and Evaluation in FCS Education, Chemistry of Foods and Nutrition for Secondary teachers, Cultural Aspects of Foods and Nutrition and a workshop in Grantsmanship and Service Learning. Dr. Kramer has an interest in international education and has worked and presented papers in several countries abroad, including India and Moscow, Russia.

With over 35 years experience, research interests include curriculum development for middle and secondary school programs and providing inservice workshops related to curriculum and teaching pedagogy. Research has also included product development and testing for a large consumer products corporations. Most recently, efforts have focused on a seven year partnership funded project, interdisciplinary rape prevention curriculum for ages 12-19, has been written and inserviced to over 1000 teachers, administrators, school nurses, and counselors  in Indiana from 1998-2004. The CARe project has been funded through the Indiana Department of Health and Center for Disease Control (CDC) and is partnership with Purdue University.

Dr. Kramer is a past recipient of the Faculty Service Award from Indiana State University and in 2001 she received the President’s Medal from ISU. She was selected as a distinguished Alum of Purdue University in 1999. Also, she received the National Outstanding Career and Technical Educator Award in 2001 from the American Association of Career and Technical Education.
