Grad Student 101

Timeline / Checklist



Use the timeline below to make sure you are taking the right steps financially.


  1. Apply for admission. Different programs have different deadlines and requirements.
     
  2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is available as of January 1 for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents. ISU's school code is 001807.
     
  3. Loan notifications are mailed via regular postal service. You also can review your financial aid status on the MyISU Portal.
     
  4. Complete your Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling if you are a first-time borrower of loans.
     
  5. Assistantships and merit-based awards are typically offered on a rolling basis over the summer by academic departments. You also can look for part-time jobs on campus by visiting Student Employment.
     
  6. Approximately 10 days prior to beginning term, aid will disburse to your ISU student account. If you are expecting a refund, sign up for direct deposit of refunds.
     
  7. On the first day of class, Bursar bills are due for students who are already enrolled. Be sure to pay online by the due date.
