Minority Teacher/Special Services Scholarship
The Indiana General Assembly created the Minority Teacher Scholarship to encourage Black and Hispanic students to
pursue careers in education.
Eligibility
To be eligible the student must do the following:
- Be a minority student (defined as Black or Hispanic) fully admitted into programs that offer initial certifications to
teach. For details on teaching licensure, visit the Bayh College of Education.
- Reside in Indiana.
- Enroll full-time (12 credits hours or more).
- Complete a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the current year.
- Remain in good standing on all federally-funded student loans.
- Submit an application to the
State Student Assistance Commission of Indiana.
ISU Minority Teacher / Special Services Scholarship Criteria:
- Preference given to FAFSA filling date;
- Must maintain satisfactory academic standing and fully admitted as full-time student in
a teaching program;
- Must meet all criteria as set forth by SSACI for Minority Teacher / Special
Services Scholarship;
- Must apply to SSACI for scholarship by August 1 of current year;
- Must demonstrate financial need after federal and institutional grants and scholarships are awarded.
Amount
Minority students demonstrating financial need may receive up to $4,000 annually. Students who do not have demonstrated need will be awarded $1,000.
Renewal
Recipients of the scholarship must:
- Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA;
- Reapply each year;
- Complete their degree within 6 years of the first disbursement of the scholarship; and
- Agree to teach on a full-time basis in an accredited Indiana elementary or secondary school for 3 years after the first 5 years of graduating.
Those who fail to fulfill the terms of their scholarship agreements must reimburse the State of Indiana for the full amount of the scholarship plus administrative costs.
