Black and White

Mary Frisbee Johnson, Dorothy Simpson Taylor, 1993

Working in collaboration between Johnson of the Art Department and Taylor of African Studies along with their students that the artwork was conceived.  Intended to address issues of prejudice and bigotry in the culture through an examination of language.  The entire installation was exhibited at the Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis in 1994.

University students created lists of words or phrases containing the words “black’ and white”, while defining their own issues of race whether they be positive or negative..

The piece consists of forty-three individual chalkboards with vinyl lettering, ranging in size from 18 inches by 24 inches to 4feet by 12 feet.
