general education task force

Update: jUNE 20, 2008

On behalf of the General Education Task Force, we would like to thank you for your feedback on the first set of recommendations to modify and update the General Education program. The Task Force sought feedback through the GE Task Force Website and from faculty and staff at numerous forums during April, May, and June.

In response to your feedback, we now present our second set of modifications, with additional clarification on some aspects of these recommendations. Although we know this is a difficult time for some of you to review and respond, our intention is to allow members of the ISU community the opportunity to provide feedback through the website until early August. At that time, the Task Force will reconvene to review your comments and make further recommendations if needed.

The Task Force intends to gain further feedback and to continue the process of developing structure for the new program during the 2008-2009 year. We will seek continued feedback from the campus community as we engage this entire process, and we will make sure both the structure of the new program and the process for implementation have been fully vetted by those involved in General Education at ISU.

Both the first version of recommendations and the second are available at http://irt2.indstate.edu/surveys/GenEd/. A brief summary of what is changed in the second version:

We clarify issues surrounding Composition

QL category is now “Mathematics/Quantitative Literacy”

We have separated Literature and Fine Arts into two categories: “Literature (and…)”

And “Fine and Performing Arts”

History is now “Historical Studies”

Citizenship and Social Responsibility is now “Ethics and Social Responsibility”

The total number of credits needed to complete General Education for the college prepared student (one who has completed foreign language, needs no remedial math and has tested into English 107) would be 43, and the maximum would be 50. These calculations do not take into consideration those students completing a minor or studying abroad (GE coursework would be completed by the minor or study abroad).

Members of the Task Force are happy to answer any questions you might have about these changes, and we look forward to your feedback and to your questions.

Co-Chairs of the GE Task Force,
Linda Maule, General Education Coordinator
Debra Worley, Professor of Communication
