Center for Urban and environmental change (cuec)

The Center for Urban and Environmental Change at Indian State University is a joint effort among several academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, including the Department of Geography, Geology, and Anthropology, Department of Ecology and Organismal Biology, Department of Chemistry, Department of Economics, and others. The Center focuses on studies of the causes, effects, and responses to environmental change in cities and urban/suburban areas, especially those in Indiana and the Midwest. Programs and activities relate to both the science and the management of urban environmental change, including policy, regulation, technology, impact adaptation, mitigation, and remediation. Our mission at CUEC is to

To promote interdisciplinary collaborative research on the issues related to urban environmental change
To provide a forum for dialogue between Indiana State University researchers and decision-makers in governmental agencies at different levels and the public, and thus facilitate the collaboration of our faculty with local communities
To promote educational and training opportunities for students and professionals

Urban Remote sensing Laboratory

Urban Remote Sensing Laboratory is the newly developed virtual laboratory under CUEC to cater to the interests and needs of the urban remote sensing community. In the recent years we see more and more people are moving towards the city. This aspect has caused some concern and interest among the planners, environmentalist and people alike. Some work towards reducing the degradation of the urban environment due to this sudden change, some try to quantify it, some try to just talk about it and some are just concerned based on narration by others or their own experience and are not aware of exactly what is happening around their surroundings. Over the past one year we at the CUEC have tried to address some of the quantifiable terms through remote sensing measurements. We have also tried to collaborate with researchers such as environmentalists, ecologists, climatologists, etc who share similar interests to try to address this issue. On a broader scale we realized the major problem with many are that they are aware of the aspect and want to know how to quantify certain physical changes so that they could either feed the results into their model to arrive at better predications or use the measurements to justify some of the results which they have come up with based on certain models. In order to address these issues we decided to start the world's first Urban Remote Sensing Lab (URL). Our hope is provide help and guidance to people who would like to understand certain aspects of urban remote sensing, would like to share their opinions and results to others and for people who would like to discuss issues related to remote sensing and urban environment with people of their likes and interests.

Even though we try to keep the discussion as informal as possible and would moderate and answer questions for free in most cases we strongly encourage people with professional interest to take part. We at this lab would do our best to accommodate certain specific interests/help. Our primary mission is to create a platform for urban/ remote sensing community to get together and share their knowledge, raise questions and comment upon their research. We intend to take active part in encouraging and helping people who share similar interests with us.
