Geology
is the scientific
study of the Earth, its composition, structure, natural
resources, and history of the planet. As the population of
Earth continues to rise, there is an ever-increasing need for
geologists to apply their expertise in evaluating and mitigating
the impact of humans on their physical environment. Since
physical, chemical and biological processes govern our planet,
geologist must have a broad and diverse background in the
sciences. At Indiana State University, students begin their
professional careers by completing an integrated science
program. Armed with these tools, they can use their
understanding of the environment to provide essential
information for mitigating natural hazards; solving problems;
securing natural resources; and establishing government policies
for environmental protection, resource management, and public
welfare.
DEGREES
The Department of Geography, Geology, and
Anthropology offers a bachelor’s of science (BS) degree in
geology. Students can select from three areas of study:
traditional geologic studies, environmental geology, and surface
processes. Each of these areas prepares students for future
graduate studies in geology or for careers in the geoscience
field. Students can also select to minor in geology.
TRACK A: GENERAL GEOLOGY
This track
provides students with a broad background in geology. The
program can be tailored to meet the specific interests of the
student.
TRACK B: ENVIRONMENTAL GEOLOGY
The
Environmental Geology track is designed for students interested
in working as environmental geologists or hydrogeologist in
industry or for government agencies dealing with distribution
and quality of groundwater, pollution problems, waste disposal,
and hazards such as flooding and erosion.
TRACK C: SURFACE PROCESSES
Track C is
designed for students interested in pursuing professional
careers in the areas of land reclamation, surface water/soil
contamination, and conservation of natural resources.
