Mission

The mission of The NICER Lab is to improve the quality of life and outcomes for patients, students, clinicians, and educators through the development of evidence-based intervention programs.

Vision

The vision of The NICER Lab is to 

  • Continue to be recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in athletic training research
  • Facilitate and execute student research projects to instill an interest in scholarship and research
  • Collaborate with
    • the departments within Indiana State University’s College of Health and Human Services
    • the Terre Haute, Indiana community, and
    • external entities through community engagement

History

Indiana State University has a long and rich history of athletic training excellence.  Alongside the oldest and highly respected educational programs (professional and post-profession), Indiana State has established itself as a source of high quality athletic training related research.  From its inception, the research laboratories associated with Indiana State Athletic Training have been home to leading edge research which drives the profession forward.

In addition, Indiana State Athletic Training Research boasts an impressive list of athletic training research leaders including: Dr. Kenneth Knight, Dr. David Perrin, Dr. Robert Behnke, Dr. Peggy Houglum,Dr. Christopher Ingersoll, Dr. Frank Walters, and Dr. Mark Merrick.
 
Over the decades, the research laboratory has shifted names and locations to match professional and institutional growth and the faculty expertise during a given era.  The current name, the Neuromechanics, Interventions, and Continuing Education Research (NICER) Laboratory, represents the inclusive and diverse range of faculty research expertise associated with Indiana State Athletic Training while holding to the tradition of excellence that Indiana State University Athletic Training is known.  The laboratory is currently under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Games.
