Professional in the Classroom

 Purpose:

It teaches students how to apply knowledge learned from their coursework into a real world setting.
It showcases the department majors, facilities, and programs to outside business and university publics
    in an effort to promote the department and its program.
It helps enhance the image of university teaching.
It presents a “real work world” experience with an understanding of expectations, work environment, etc.
     to the students.              

 Why participate?

Help with recruitment of new employees.
Create good public relations.                      
Interact with faculty and have a chance to exchange ideas and information.                      
 The opportunity to give back.                     
 Recognition of participation, which could be used in work evaluation:
                     
 Letter from Dean and faculty.                     
 Letter from Dean to supervisor.                     
  Certificate of appreciation.                                                                 

How it starts:                      

 The Faculty or Staff prepares a list of alumni that has agreed to speak to a class or group of students.
 A Faculty member invites an alum or non-alum professional to make a presentation to their class
    including a list of possible topics or
 An alum, who is coming to Terre Haute, volunteers to speak to a group of students by contacting the
  chair of the department or one of the Faculty members.

Expectations of the Professional:                     

Discussion of topic, length, and presentation material with Faculty – upon agreement to present.
Outline of presentation – one week before presentation.
Be frank – open.
Provide copies of handout(s) to all students and faculty.

 Additional opportunities:
Meeting with all major/department/school faculty to discuss curriculum, current work environment, professional direction, internships, and   resource needs.
Meeting with individual students to provide additional counseling/mentoring.
Providing onsite visit(s) for those interested.                   

 Expectations of the Faculty member:

Class Outline given to the Professional – one month before presentation.
Class Attendance and Make up given to Professional – one month before presentation.
Discussion of topic, length, and presentation material with Professional – upon agreement to present.
Meet Professional one hour – one half hour before presentation.                     
Attend the full presentation and assist with student’s questions.                    
Ensure all necessary equipment is available and working.                    
Ensure parking pass is available and give parking location.                   
Additional opportunities:
                    
Show university/school/department.                    
Discuss the needs of the department.                   
Show future plans of the major or curriculum.
