The Department of Physical Education provides the opportunity for students
to: (1) gain a teaching license;
2) pursue a major in Sports Studies with
specializations in adult fitness and exercise science; and (3) develop
physical fitness and sports skills through activities offered in the General
Education program. The department also
offers endorsements and/or minors in
areas such as coaching, dance, martial arts, and sports studies.
Physical Education majors may earn either the Bachelor of Science or
Bachelor of Arts degree. Candidates for
these degrees should consult the
University requirements for graduation, including General Education
requirements, described in the University Catalog.

TEACHING CURRICULA
Students should be thoroughly familiar with the requirements for the
teaching curriculum and admission to the
Teacher Education Program.
Additionally, students will follow the School of Education's required sequence
of
professional courses and admission requirements. Refer to the School of
Education and the Department of
Curriculum, Instruction, and Media Technology
in the University Catalog.
The teacher education major provides you with theoretical knowledge
combined with practical application
working with students in area schools.
Beginning with your freshman year, you are progressively guided through
learning experiences which prepare you for a career in teaching. Numerous
opportunities are included in which
you apply concepts of teaching in high school, middle school, and elementary school settings. The culmination of
your
program will be student teaching which provides a semester long teaching
experience.
You will enjoy small classes taught by professors recognized nationally for their expertise in teacher education.
This major may be added to the All Grade Education Instructional License and its coverage is all grades.

Physical Education 391-2 hrs. is required in the All Grade Professional
Sequence described in the Department

Teaching Minors Available include:
Physical Education Minor (25 hours)
This minor may be added to the Senior High-Junior High/Middle School or
All Grade Instructional License; its
coverage is grades 5-12. Physical Education Early Childhood, Kindergarten-Primary, and Elementary
Education Minor (24 semester hours)
This minor may be added to the Early Childhood Education, Kindergarten-Primary
Education, and Elementary
Education Instructional Licenses; coverage will be
the level of the license.
Coaching Education Minor (22 hours)
This minor has been designed for the non-physical education major/minor. It is
designed for other teacher
education majors/minors who will be licensed
teachers in the public schools. These future teachers may also be
the major
cadre of coaches within public schools by the turn-of-the-century. The
Coaching Education Minor
will prepare them for the responsibilities of a
coach.
A course of study which leads to licensure for coaching men's and women's
interscholastic athletic teams in
Indiana. This endorsement may be added to
any Indiana Instructional License. Students who complete a major
or minor in
physical education including the courses Physical Education 401 and, 403, and
6 hours of
prescribed coaching theory courses will have satisfied the coaching
endorsement.
The Physical Education Sports Studies Major provides a cross discipline
choice of courses to meet student
career interests. This curriculum is
designed specifically for students interested in careers such as fitness
specialists, exercise physiologists, fitness center managers, and geriatric
fitness specialists. The sports studies
major blends basic knowledge with
practical application. Coursework provides basic knowledge and a
culminainating internship at a location of your choice anywhere in the United
States gives you on-the-job
experience. Well- equipped laboratories also
provide you with the practical hands-on training in fitness
assessment and sports performance analysis as well as give you the opportunity to pursue
research projects as
a degree option.

courses are to be chosen from departments other than physical education and
are to provide depth
and/or breadth to the major.
The curriculum is designed specifically for students interested in
careers such as martial arts, fitness instructor,
and dance exercise
instructor. A grade of C or better is required for all sports studies minor
classes. In addition,
each student must have an advisor in the Department of
Physical Education.
This curriculum is designed for students who are interested in studying
dance with a concentration in other
oriented or traditional forms of dance.
This program will further orient the student with dance methodology.
