           The Department of Recreation and Sport Management serves the University, the public, and professional communities
     by providing opportunities for learning, research, scholarship, service, and leadership through service and learning-centered
    activities, servant-leadership activities, publications and presentations, and mentoring students, colleagues, and practitioners. 
    Courses of study stress development of programming and management competencies in organizing, planning, and budgeting
    within a variety of settings.  Students are involved in learning the basics of recreation management while specializing
    in recreation therapy, , public parks and recreation, or sport management.  The department programs are nationally
    accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association/American Association for Leisure and Recreation Council
    on Accreditation.

  
    ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

    DEGREES OFFERED
          
The Department of Recreation and Sport Management offers a single degree in Recreation and Sport Management.
    There are three emphasis areas that students can select. They are community parks and recreation, recreation therapy,
    and sport management. Candidates for any of these degrees must successfully complete the University requirement
    of a minimum of 124 semester hours of credit, including General Education course work, as well as the requirements
    for the departmental major.

     The bachelor of science in recreation and sport management prepares students to enter a wide variety of positions
    in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. Students in all emphasis areas develop and exhibit basic skills in small
    group leadership, activity planning, and management. The community park and recreation program emphasizes work
    in the public sector at the state, county, and municipal level focusing on the delivery of park and recreation programs
    and services, to include program delivery, planning, marketing, and finance. Students in recreation therapy
    emphasize development of skills to work as part of a treatment team focusing on individuals with disabilities, aged, and
    criminal offenders. Students focus on recreation therapy methods, treatment modalities, working as part of a treatment
    team, and supporting psychology, medical terminology, and physiology courses. The sport management emphasis
    focuses on preparing students to enter the growing discipline of sport delivery. Students will enter the commercial,
    professional sport, collegiate sport, campus recreation, nonprofit sports programs, or community sports programs,
    upon graduation. Specific emphasis is given to governance of sport, marketing, finance, and management functions.
    All students are required to complete 1) practicum service-learning hours prior to a 2) 15 week 600 hour internship.

            All students, upon graduating from the program qualify to sit for the Certified Park and Recreation Professional and
     Certified Therapeutic Recreation Professional exams.

            The American Humanics Program in nonprofit management is housed in the Department and is an external certificate
     program preparing students for employment in the nonprofit sector. The certificate program in nonprofit management at
     Indiana State University is affiliated with American Humanics, a national organization dedicated to preparing students for
     careers in nonprofit youth and human service agencies. The American Humanics program at Indiana State University is an
     interdisciplinary program designed to provide students from a variety of disciplines for meaningful careers in the management
     of nonprofit agencies. Students who enroll in the program work toward certification from American Humanics by meeting a
     variety of curricular and co-curricular requirements.

    

     DEPARTMENT OPPORTUNITIES

              The Department of Recreation and Sport Management faculty are dedicated to provide quality experiential learning
     opportunities through course design, internships, and service learning projects.  All majors in the department sponsor active
     student groups that have close ties to professional organizations in their field.

  Each major is assigned a faculty academic advisor. Majors and minors in the Department are encouraged to
      maintain good contact with their advisor and are expected to plan their academic career  with their advisor. 
     Departmental scholarships are available for majors, usually sophomore through senior status.   Information about
     scholarships is available on the Department website. The Department sponsors three clubs – one each in recreation
     therapy, community parks and recreation, and sport management. The RCSM 380 class is an annual multiple-day 
     field experience to  sport, community park and recreation, and recreation therapy sites. Students are actively
     encouraged to attend state, regional, and national professional meetings.

 The Indiana State University Field Campus provides excellent opportunities for students to experience the
     outdoors, leadership opportunities, and practicum and internship experiences. The  72 acre field campus includes
     7 ponds, a high-ropes course, climbing  tower, leadership course, and multiple trails. Located just 20 minutes from
     the main campus, the field campus is an excellent opportunity for students.

     ACCREDITATION

             The Department of Recreation and Sport Management is accredited by the National Recreation & Park
     Association and American Association for Leisure and Recreation National Council on Accreditation.

     Recreation and Sport Management Major (55 semester hours)

     Required Courses (37 semester hours):

     Lower Division Courses:  135- 3 hrs.; 136--2 hrs.; 136L--1 hr.; 236--3 hrs.; 275--3 hrs.; 280--3 hrs.

     Upper Division Courses:  336--3 hrs.; 342--3 hrs.; 390--1 hr.; 434--3 hrs.; 435--3 hrs.; 446--3 hrs.; 491--6 hrs.

      Departmental Emphasis (18 hours)

          Students will choose a departmental emphasis in any of the following areas:   park and community
    recreation management; sport management; or recreation therapy.

          Students are encouraged to investigate, select and complete a minor.  Examples of minors include:
    business administration, finance, marketing, journalism, public administration, psychology, or exercise science.

           In addition to the major requirements, recreation therapy students must complete the following: 
    Athletic Training 210--2 hrs., 225--3 hrs.; Physical Education 220--2 hrs.; Psychology 266--3 hrs., 368--3 hrs.;
    Sociology 240--3 hrs.

      Recreation and Sport Management Minors

     Sport Management Minor (18 semester hours)

             The sport management minor consists of six upper division courses focused primarily on sport management issues. 
    The student can complete the minor as a resident student as well as a distance education student.  The minor blends very
    well with business administration, finance, and marketing curricula, and compliments journalism, physical education,
    radio-television-film, and recreation majors.

    Required Courses:  Recreation and Sport Management 264--3 hrs.; 420--3 hrs.; 430--3 hrs.; 435--3 hrs.;
                                     451--3 hrs.; 495--3 hrs.

    Recreation Therapy Minor (28 semester hours)

             The recreation therapy minor allows students in health-related areas to become eligible to sit for the National Council
     for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) examination.

    Required Courses: Recreation and Sport Management 270—3 hrs.; 371—3 hrs.; 470-3 hrs.; 492—3 hrs.;
                                    Psychology 266—3 hrs.; 368—3 hrs.; Sociology 240—3 hrs.; Athletic Training 210—2 hrs.; 225—3 hrs.;
                                    Physical Education 220--2 hrs.*

    *Note: Life Sciences 231/231L may be taken instead of Athletic Training 210 and Physical Education 220.

   
     American Humanics Certificate Program

            The American Humanics Certificate Program is an externally administered certificate program preparing students
     for employment in nonprofit organizations focusing primarily, but not wholly, on youth serving organizations.
     American Humanics is a national certifying body with established partnerships with major nonprofits such as
     United Way, YMCA, YWCA, Boys and Girls Club, Girls, Inc., and others.

     Required courses: Recreation and Sport Management 150--3 hrs.; 462--1 hr.
