Faculty Profile

Jennifer Ryan received her B. Mus. in Music History from the University of Memphis in 1998 and her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 2008.  Her dissertation, "Can I get a Witness?': Soul and Salvation in Memphis Music," concerns the blurry line between the sacred and the secular in soul music, both past and present.  Her work appears in Black Music Research Journal, Popular Music, and the forthcoming Encyclopedia of African American Music.  She is the co-founder and co-chair of the Society for Ethnomusicology's Special Interest Group for Sacred and Religious music.  Her current research concerns music and tourism and music on expeditions to Antarctica.
