The Indiana State Tricycle Derby was first run in 1963 as a 10-lap race around the sidewalks of the Quadrangle on children's tricycles. The races featured a men's and women's division (the Powder Puff Derby).
The races now feature men's and women's teams racing on specially built tricycles at Recreation East and the Michael Simmons Student Activity Center at Ninth and Sycamore streets the Friday afternoon before Homecoming. Each team qualifies for the race prior to the actual Sycamore Tricycle Derby. The fastest male and female rider qualifying for the race is honored with the title of “Hot Wheels”.
This year the alumni association will be hosting the Third Annual Alumni Tricycle Derby Race on Oct. 4 at Michael Simmons Student Activity Center. We are currently collecting names and information from individuals who are interested in participating in the alumni race. Participation for this event May be limited depending upon interest. The races will begin at 4:30 P.M. and the alumni race will take place first.
If you are interested in organizing a team, collect the names of team members, affiliation/team name, email addresses, phone numbers, and graduation year. You can email team information to Gary Ballinger at gballinger@indstatefoundation.org or call 1-800-258-6478.
