GH301: Legend And Belief

course description

Legend and Belief provides an in-depth, experiential understanding of the legend. During the semester you will examine traditional narratives that are “told as truth” in a number of world cultures and in a variety of contexts, beginning with historical narratives and concluding with contemporary (urban) legends. You will read about, listen to, and interpret historical legends, local legends, place-name legends, supernatural legends, comic legends, and urban legends.

The course includes active, hands-on work with the legend. You will learn how to conduct interviews and document folklore, and you will have the opportunity to engage in actual folklore fieldwork, recording and transcribing legends and submitting your findings for permanent accession in the ISU Folklore Archives. A research/writing project will include documentation and analysis of a legend (or legends) of your choosing. Finally, you will be able to engage in legend sessions and experience a legend trip, visiting local legend sites.
