Critical Studies of the Latino Diaspora

Course DescriptionThe class centers on the discussion of the term “Diaspora” (from the ancient Greek, διασπορά or a scattering of seeds) and how it applies to Hispanics and Latinos who have been forced out of their respective homelands due to economic, social and/or political pressures. We discuss how the “Latino Diaspora” is represented in the literature, art, architecture, culture, history and popular media of the USA. Among the “texts” to be discussed we find a work of political cartoons called Migra Mouse and an episode of Family Guy that deals with Mexicans in the US. Students also get the unique opportunity to participate in the production of a unique documentary that will try to, objectively, look at the problem of illegal immigration into the US and how it is viewed by political contenders. Furthermore, students are encouraged to attend a number of events in Indiana that celebrate the presence of the Latino Diaspora in the state. |
